Welcome Christy. I see you're in Birchwood, too. Good luck with the roosters. If anyone is interested, I do have a Lynden connection for very affordable humane butchering.
For all the group: I just wanted to share that I finally fulfilled a several-years old urge and spent my holiday $$ buying flocks of chickens and ducks for folks in third world countries, through Heifer Intl. $10 buys 20 chicks or ducklings for someone. It's amazing how good it feels - hopefully my family wil feel the same when they get a small homemade trinket and a card saying what their gift-money bought!
Happy to join this group of chicken lovers! We are currently 17 strong but looking for homes for 1 or 2 roosters...

My gals generally slow down this time of year because a number of them are molting, as well as the shorter days. Why they molt in winter is beyond me. Better than January I guess! When they molt, they need their energy to grow new feathers, so I also give them protein-rich feed (left-over chick feed). I do keep a light in the coop on a timer, which is also good for a heating red bulb when it gets super cold. But I usually give them a couple months break while they're molting. In the wild, chickens would only lay in the long daylight months, unless they live at the equator. By adding a light, we're "forcing" them, in a way. So I figure it's probably good for them to catch a break for a few months. I never manage to give them the whole winter as it gets too frustrating fo be buying feed AND breaking ice for them on cold mornings AND buying eggs!

I feel fortunate- my girls haven't slowed down at all. Sure wish they would come in the coop at night though- they still want to bunch up on the perch outside.

Always wanted them, finally living amongst 15 of them...but nobody is laying since it got cold (even though they are young'uns)!! Meanwhile I'll appease myself with chicken talk.

Hey Flock, there is another Chicken group on Facebook, called Whatcom Chicken Wonks! If you do a search on facebook you can find it...they are 67 strong and are planning a holiday get-together. We should meet up with them!! Sounds like a good group and I always say, the more the merrier.

Hi Elena Welcome to the flock. I would be happy to contribute some eggs and exchange eggs for baked goods as well
Hi, My name is Elena, I am from Students for Sustainable Food at WWU. We are having a bake sale on 12/1/09 which will be mostly vegan baked goods, but we were wondering if anyone from this group would like to donate an egg or two (probably only need 6 eggs max) for our sale? We would love to exchange an egg for a couple baked goods as well. Please email me at ssf.wwu@gmail.com if you are interested.

We all forgot our cameras this time, Kate. On the list for next trip!
I found one carpooling leftover item: a silver Klean Kanteen.
