Hi I've just joined this group. I read through the entire comment wall from the beginning.....Lots of good info. Thanks.
We just got 4 pullets. They are about 2 months old. Barred Rocks. We found a used coop on Craigs List for a good price and I cleaned it and painted it. Wonderful neighbors helped haul it to our place. Next I plan to make a fenced in run for them. Its fun getting to know our hens they are so sweet.

Anyone have extra female ducks? I have a friend that needs a couple replacements. She has Rouens but she said a cross or another large breed may do fine.

That is funny to hear Kate, the only problem I have with that is my cat loves to eat chicken crumbles (he'll tear into the bag if I bring it home and don't out it away in time)!

A little off the subject, but I read that chicken crumbles (as in feed) also makes a great biodegradable kitty litter! Cheaper too!

I tend to go by intuition, observation, laissez-faire and best guess rather than being scientific about things. I do it when I think of it or one of the girls is looking a little peaked or scruffy. Maybe every couple months or so....

I like the idea for preventative measures, how often do you do this with the pumpkin seeds mixture?

No, I just watch their general health. Don't use vets much with my birds - only if one is sick beyond my means of treatment and (callous as it may sound) worth saving.
