So, Scarlett's brood hatched today, all 4 of them - It was a lovely sight to behold. I feel honored with the opportunity!

I now have a broody hen, my first! Under "Scarlett", Buff Orpington, I found her on 7 eggs today. I have left 5 and took the two pullet eggs out, less likely to be fertile, and will check the eggs in 7 days for any sign of life. So, I plan to let her raise some chicks.....how fun.

Hi chicken fans,
I just felt like sharing some endearing moments with our pullets. They have been in their coop which has a patio and a down stairs dining room plus an upstairs roosting room (and laying box). They are doing ok with the little space while I work on building fence panels for the run. Last night I rigged up a temporary run over an empty garden bed and put them in there today. I believe it was the first time they have touched the earth. They immediately began dust bathing alternating with scratching and pecking the soil. I felt so elated for their natural pleasure. Then this evening we transferred them back to the coop. After sunset I peeked into the upstairs to see if all four had made it up the stairs. They have been in a pattern of 3 going up and those 3 hover at the entrance while the 4th one stays huddled at the bottom of the stairs. I've been gently encouraging the 4th one up the stairs until last night she made it on her own. They haven't gotten up onto the roost by themselves ever. So a couple nights I have put them on the roost. Mostly they have huddled on the floor together. Well tonight when I peeked in, all 4 where upstairs and on the roost, quietly doing that sweet peeping/murmering amongst themselves.

Jamie, One idea for organizing some of the great info tucked in among 25 flock pages over the past year, would be to open a Discussion within this group title: “Greatest of the Flock Tips”.
Then cut & paste some of your favorites in the text, and let the rest of the flock add the ones they've found to be most helpful.( I can help coach if I'm called on the phone as I don't get this groups emails forwarded.)
I am so often impressed by the wisdom that Alicia & Alys & others share with us all!
Love the new chickie name Butterscotch!

Welcome to the flock Angela! This here flocks been growing since spring of 09 when Kate started it! I'm sure there are more urban chickens now than human members over the past year.
I am totally impressed you read through all 25 pages of the comments! There is so much wisdom shared here. So far nobody has organized it in easy to find discussions, but when we scratch around we can find lots to nourish us.
