Thanks Alicia - for moving my post - the links/website confuse me a bit - not quite used to it.  Thanks also to Jamie for the welcome!  Glad to know straw was the right way to go - made sense to me.

'candled' our eggs in the incubator tonight, been in there about 8 days - not sure what I am looking at, but they seem much heavier, blobs inside of different sizes which can't be a good sign since they should all be the same age, and a few were clear or appeared empty.  I'm pretty jazzed since I was sensing they were all duds or we had somehow ruined them.

We brought our new little bantam couple in for chicken races - the kids all thought I was nuts ('chickens dont RACE Moooommm').  Not if you don't train them and set about training them and well, they didn't officially race but in a hurry I had them racing after two bread crumbs thrown at the same time down each 'track'.  The things you can do when have critters and kids who are getting a little bored without school and usual activities.

Having fun being a chicken head again!  Feels good!

Thanks again for the welcomes!

Erin

Erin - re the hens - I have decided to take them to my place but may not keep them all.  Give me a call and we can talk:  360-715-1259.

I find that straw is best for insulating against cold.  Just have to get the feed and water up off the floor ... and of course some still gets in!

Welcome, Erin - your comment ended up on my wall instead of the groups - so I'll copy it here.

......

Hello!  We are new to the area and TW website.  Now that I have a few chickens, thought I would sign up for this group also.  I am looking for more chickens - I saw Alicia's post but am probably too late as it
was from Dec 14th that someone was looking to rehome some chickens.  if
you know of anyone, we are looking for all kinds of chickens especially
great layers/broody types, but we love all kinds of chickens.

Incubator - I bought one from Laurel - pretty pricey for styrofoam - $80 - but desperate to get some 'cooking' for hatching.  Holds about 4 dozen eggs I think. I dont like the styrofoam one bit and suspect it
will hinder how many hatch - just my instincts around that, not based on
anything. Would love to know how to make one or share one with
someone.  I have not researched making one and the nicer ones I have
seen are too big and/or too expensive for our little home operation!

Also, what does everyone find best to put inside their coops for winter bedding?  We moved into a place with a coop already existing and it has wood shavings which only serve to get in the food/water no matter
what I have tried to isolate food and water from the shavings, nothing
works.  I bought some straw - I know this doubles as good mulch down the
road also when its mixed in with the chicken doo.  I imagine the straw
will get kicked into the water also, but easier for them to separate
from the food in the feeder.  Anyway to get these off the ground to keep
any bedding out of food and water?  Would love to know what the best
bedding is for bacteria, staying clean longer, comfy for the gals and
their guy.

Chickens and cold weather - a friend of mine made me a little light box that I put the water on top of and turn on when the weather is going to go below freezing....it worked really well thru Thanksgivings big freeze....let me kno w if you want more details on it's construction or a pic or two... :)  Jamie

Hello All!  Happy New Year!

I am exploring making an incubator - this could be a shared one if others have some eggs they would like to have hatched but do not have a broody hen.

I am interested in hatching some "olive eggers" some day and perhaps some other rare breeds, so I have been contemplating building my own.

It's a huge stretch with my naive and inexperienced building skills.  Is there anyone interested in helping me build one of these?

I'm not sure which to build at this point. I am only interested in building a small one - dozen eggs max......

Sincerely,  Jamie

My chickie who emerged on the Equinox has laid a Solstice egg and a wee one at THAT!  Obviously she is NOT a Roo!  :)

Happy Solstice,  Jamie

I also found this site that sells solar shed lights:

http://www.yonofoco.com/solar-shed-lighting-systems.html

Seems a little too affordable to be true but a smaller investment for off-grid chickens...  ;-}
