Welcome new members: We are not a 'chat' group, so you won't received many emails from us.  We are growers & seed-savers who network together on resources, educational events, and to promote opportunities for sharing & saving seeds.

For  offerings or requests for specific seeds, or to initiate a topic conversation, please use our groups 'Start Discussion' option below.

Most of our members are also part of the larger 'Earth Garden' network at: https://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/group/organic

(Group admins currently are Heather K & David P. and more are welcome).

Events we wish to promote can be done through the main TW "Events" tab: https://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/events  and through the Sustainable Bellingham calendar: http://www.sustainablebellingham.org/events/community-calendar  .

We now have a group page on faceboo -"Salish Seed Co-op".

Hey all, I need some multiplier onions to plant! I've not run into anyone around here growing them...any of you have any leads or planting stock?

Nettle is now in green seed stage, a good time to collect some seeds for medicinal purposes.
Also bean seeds are now being harvesting while they are dry and many grains are being harvested. Great time to walk through the garden, woods, fields to see what is ready to harvest or soon will be.

Hi Seed Savers! Remember, now is the time to plant your dry beans, flour corn, and buckwheat! Coming soon it will be warm enough for those millets and amaranths to germinate.

Pass the word if anyone is looking for some really early dry beans (both bush and pole), I have lots in little seed packs, plus flax, buckwheat, favas, flour corn, amaranth, soybeans. Call me at 224-4757 or email kristamrome@yahoo.com

An article written on how GMO seeds might be currently effecting our region would be great.
Possibly posted as a 'Discussion' in the larger Organic Gardeners..Permi group or the main TW page.

The word-on-the-street is that some local farmers are finding out that their animal feed has GMO seed in it, and they're concerned with it sprouting and crossing with their farm crops.

Hey Seed Savers,
Some of you may have joined a FOOD related workgroup at the TGU. Check out the new TW event "All FOOD Workgroups Potluck" scheduled for Sunday, April 25th 5:00 PM. RSVP if you are in, or want to join, a FOOD workgroup. Among other things, we'll decide on a better way to communicate with everyone in the future.

Navajo Grey Squash is a member of the Hubbard family, smaller and more grey than blue compared to a Blue Hubbard. It is solid, delicious and stores well. I've never seen the seed in commerce. It seems to be a Whatcom backyard special. I have the last half of the last Navajo Grey in the fridge. I have some seed left from the last squash if anyone would like some.

Hi All,
The Backyard Beans & Grains Project now has seed kits available to jump start the growing efforts of anyone interested in expanding the storage crops we produce locally in our gardens and farms. They are available for a donation that will go to offset the costs of all the seed trials we do each year. If you know anyone who is interested, please pass the word. It would make a great gift for mother's day or birthday for a gardener or sustainability-minded friend. The kits this year will include a variety of dry beans, favas, soybeans, flax, buckwheat, dry field corn, and amaranth. Please email me for more information: kristamrome@yahoo.com.
