Hey Chicken People- how's your flocks doing this winter? I got some organic feed and mine are laying BIGGER eggs now! I don't have room for any more chicks, but may expand my coop this summer for a couple more next year.

FYI, let's figure out what kind of display we want to do at The GReat Unleashing on April 10. Does anyone have some girls that would be okay "on display"? Any other ideas?

Anyone planning to order chicks from McMurray's this year? I have another friend who wants a few, as do I. We could put together an order. Got b'gaks?

Whoah, what a thing to wake up to! I just got a sweet new alarm clock from Christy - name of Henry. He's part Banty so a much mellower "alarm". He has a twin who, I believe, is still looking for a home, if anyone's looking.

Well, I thought I'd share what I've learned about chicken blindness. Apparently some hens can go blind from too much ammonia - ie fresh droppings in an enclosed space, especially during cold winter days when they stay inside for warmth. I don't think this is the cause of Jane's vision problems as the coop was cleaned just before the cold snap and there's no crusting near her eyes or nostrils but it's a something to be aware of.

I also found a posting on blind chickens on The Poultry Site, if anyone's interested. Seems they adapt pretty well: http://www.thepoultrysite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5767

For now, I'll provide her with wider boards in the coop so she can get in and out more easily and see what happens.

Poor thing- I don't know about that, maybe one of the old hands will know. I am using a red heat lamp during the coldest nights, but 5 of my 6 hens still want to roost outside, at least at first. They may move in during the night, but they seem pretty hardy.

Concerning blind hens and winter light bulbs in the coop:
Does anyone have experience with a blind hen? One of my Americauna girls seems to be losing her vision. So far she's finding her way to the food and follows the flock but has a hard time maneuvering inside the coop and staying on the ramp in and out. Any feedback will be appreciated as I figure out how to live with this and make things easier for her.

I'm also curious to hear what sorts of lightbulbs you all use in your coops during these cold times.

Thanks, Alicia

Hey- it was great to meet up with some of the Whatcom Chicken Wonks at the Copper Hog. I'm thinkin' we outa combine forces for a Great First Annual All Bellingham Chicken Coop Open House Tour next spring or summer. We could do a map and people could go to the ones they want...and hopefully bike or walk or carpool around. I hear there are some beautiful coops out there- masterpieces. (not mine).

Also, I'm thinkin' we should have a Chicken area at The Great Unleashing. We could call it Coopville and have all things chicken there...a coop building workshop on site, chicken experts there to answer questions, even maybe a couple outgoing hens for people to see. Whatya think?

Thank you so much for the input Barbara! My little lady perked up after a few hours under the heat lamp inside, some water, little bit of food and some quiet, alone time. I hope this was just a weird little phase and she is back to being herself! Perhaps you were right about the food in her crop....or maybe she was just really, really cold!
