Thanks, everybody, for your kind thoughts. Clarice was definitely a free spirit. She loved coming here to visit with my girls, although I don't think I'll let them come to the memorial.

Alicia, my condolences. Your mom was a great lady. I enjoyed many activities with her through BUF. Hadn't put you two together, but of course it fits now!!!

I will do that! Alicia- so sorry to hear about your mom. Alicia's mother died this week- she was a great lady and very active in all kinds of social justice work in our community. Plus, she was just a delightful person to know. My condolences- I hope the living world around you is a comfort, including your girls.

Hi Kate, I would second Alicia's suggestion on asking Glen at Hohl's Feed and Seed to present info about chickens and chicken raising....he is a wealth of information and has worked with birds of all kinds for over 20+ years...and he loves to help you with your chicken questions....a veritable gold mine!

Thanks Alicia! Apparently we are also going to a have a "flock" of chickens that will roost in various community members' yards to remind them about the Unleashing! (Plus, a very LARGE mobile chicken...stay posted)

If you can get him, Glen at Hohl's is a fountain of knowledge and very forthcoming. It would guide current and future chicken fans to the store as a good local source for supplies; worth asking him.

Anybody have suggestions for some Chicken Experts to staff a table at the Unleashing? WSU Extension...don't they do some poultry classes? Or maybe one of the local farm stores? ANy ideas welcome!

This is one of the best resources for choosing the right breed for you. Its a chart of every breed(every one I've heard of), their temperment, egg laying, weather hardiness, history. Definately check it out. Also, you can check backyard chicken forums for chicken questions and coop plans.

If you search online you can find some free coops. We found plenty of free plans for making them out of pallets. But plans for expensive, professional looking ones are harder to come by.
Good Luck

Hi everyone...
I'm hoping to start my first laying flock this season. I'm getting a late start.

I am talking to someone about building the coop & won't be able to start it till mid March or mid April because of traveling that I'm now doing.

What is a good source to find out what kind of hens to get & to get additional ideas for a coop that will hold about a dozen chickens???

Enjoy your Redheads. My two are the personality girls of my flock ... friendly and also opportunists.
