Judith, you are right, we are casting a wide net with the movie nights...so, perhaps one of the things we should focus on on our meeting night is how to get more people involved in TF....and maybe to do that we could invite either David M., Cindi Landreth, or Rick Dubrow, or one of the other core TW members to help us with ideas on how to engage others, people in the areas where we live who may have no knowlege of Transition Towns, TW, TF or peak oil and have some resistance to the concepts therein. Your thoughts, anyone...............

Alys, I have one more person in the core group to contact to set the date for the meeting at your house. I send a personal message to Justen whenever we have had a film.

At the last film night I got 14 emails for people who want to be notified of the next film night. However, many of the people I talked to that night live in Bellingham. We are casting a wide net and meeting people from other cities.

I am curious....what happened to all the people who we met with last fall and discussed how to make Ferndale a more community oriented place. Seems that there were more than just 8 of us???? there was a young man who talked about bicycles and building them, and I think his partner, and there was a man from Blaine who also participated...are we truly only 8 including David M? We need more people!!! What about the people who showed up at Homegrown....do we have their phone numbers and/or email addresses. I would be happy to do some calling and/or writing to some of them to encourage more participation.

Great to hear you had a nice crowd for the Homegrown showing.

I encourage folks to be reading the Transition Handbook and to start following the 12 Steps of Transition as a pathway to move Transition Ferndale forward.

Movie nights are a great tool for the "Awareness Raising" step. Are you collecting contact info from the new people that show up to the movies? The TW signup sheet can be downloaded and printed out from the TI Resources page: http://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/page/ti-resources

Then you could send that info on to me to add these folks to the TW mailing list and I also send them invites to join the website here (or one of you could do that step, preferably).

Other info relevant to Transition Initiatives available on that page as well; mostly handouts you can print out at this point, and info to promote the GU.

Home Grown the movie was very inspiring. It was so unusual to see a family of siblings and their father living together and working their urban farm. They sure had their act together!

I would be up for a second meeting of Transition Ferndale each month. We just need to discuss which days are best for the most of us and pick it. Thanks Alys for bringing it up. I have been so busy I haven't logged on here for at least a month, or so it seems.

I think the movie nights are important because they seem to attract new people to the discussion, which in the long run is at the heart of how things get done. Let's pick a night and I'll be there.

Great discussion...I thoroughly enjoyed the potluck movie and I always love to see people meeting and meeting new people. And I loved the “pay it forward reference” and it is on my mind today. I think another meeting in the month would be great and maybe we could meet at each others homes as we move into the upcoming seasons. Gardens are always way fun!! Or there may be great places we can meet from time to time. (IE: Greene's Corner near me) I value supporting the locals whenever I can. I am very interested in what others do in their immediate neighborhood to connect with their neighbors and the planning and preparation they are doing for the descent. It will be more and more important for us continue this planning, sharing and expanding as we can. I think we can shoot to get together twice a month. I will be happy to set up the movie and am mulling over our next selection now. I am happy to stay somewhat loose knit right now as we find our way. I am enjoying the community we have shared so far.

Our potluck and showing of Homegrown on Wed night was quite a party! About forty people came and the room was constantly buzzing with conversation. The discussion about gardening/farming after the movie was led by Walter Haugen and he easily answered a lot of specific questions. Peggy will be arranging another potluck/movie in March and then it's on to the Great Unleashing in April.

Right now we, as Transition Ferndale, are only loosely organized ...someone described us as a gaggle. What needs to happen is for someone to take charge of setting up a meeting to see how people want to proceed.

David and I would be interested in a second monthly meeting along the lines Alys described. Also we are deep into our online course on post peak living. We have many resources and ideas we could share. We are actively working on our Jump for Joy plan that I posted in a discussion on this group. We have soooo far to go but at least we are starting.

The most important question: Is anyone out there? Your responses will tell us if there is interest. We are waiting eagerly to hear from you all. Judith

Hello to all TF people....I just re-read the above post, What Do We Want From Transition Ferndale, which was posted on Nov 17, 2009...and it appears that not much has happened since then...other than the 2 movies shown at WECU....sorry, I did not attend Homegrown, which I had already seen, and had other things going on that day or I would have come to the potluck........anyway, on to my reason for writing now. I am wondering what, if anything came out of the last meeting at WECU, and if so, what. And, I am wondering if we are still an active group, as I have not had a lot of contact with anyone in the group since November, other than a very short phone conversation with Judy in January....it would be good to follow through with the things listed from the meeting in November, like identifying skills, tools, equipment to share, sharing skills and ideas with others, etc. I would like to see us meet more often and actively make plans for things we can do to help one another, especially as spring arrives and there is much to do to get ready for gardening. There is an unofficial group I know of in the Everson area that is already living what we have talked about - meeting monthly, making plans of action and following through with various activities to help one another. I would like that to happen with the Ferndale group. Input anyone???

Hello, Ferndale, Where have the last few months gone? After Christmas we went to Portland for a week...where we have 3 grandsons. The good news is that we now have two more on the way. They've been busy!!

David spent the last few months putting up siding on our house. As I type, the insulation installers are at work and the sheetrockers will start next week. This is a big milestone for us.

We are also taking an online discussion course called the Uncrash course from postpeakliving.com. We're busy every day making plans and preparing our more resilient future. This week's topic is Food and Water and our homework is to post our plans online. In addition to the lectures and resources from the course, there are 25-30 participants from US, Canada and Austrailia, each sharing their plans, ideas, links, and encouragement. Having weekly homework really gets us going.

The Uncrash cost us $49 but at the website there is also a free course which we started with last year. It is also helpful to get you going...just no pressure to actually do the homework.

Hope to see you all soon at the movie night on Feb 17 at 5:30. Same routine as last time. Details on the event page. Homegrown is an uplifting film about a family doing successful urban gardening. Getting together will give us a chance to catch up, decide what kind of a group we want to be, and talk about the Great Unleashing.
