Comment by Kate Clark 1 day ago Here is the basic agenda--Welcome and short intro to TW (5 minutes); Short review of the agenda; breakout by area/neighborhood to meet up, get to know each other, swap contact info, think about possible projects; come back together and invite sharing about ideas; Short intro to some existing projects, and a little brainstorming about other possible projects; break out by project area allowing time to go to more than one project area; come back to larger group and have a little time for sharing about that experience if anyone wants to; closing and MAYBE a little surprise at the end.

thanks, Judith. another option is the WECU here in Ferndale. it's free and they have a great education room with everything you could want. any one can use it once a month. I may not make it again this wednesday cuz it looks like I may be coming down with a cold. hoping that is what it is but i sure don't want to share. unless it drags on I am planning to come to the sunday meet. it's very exciting that this is happening and I am really looking forward to learning from and sharing witn our Ferndale community.

Hello, everybody,

By now you should have received an email from Kate Clark about “Let’s Walk the Walk” this coming Sunday at the Radio Museum. This will be a great opportunity for us to meet as a neighborhood and plan future adventures. David and I will be arriving at 11:30 to help set up. If we haven’t met, ask for us.

Save the date for a soon-to-be-announced potluck, barter, music making event at Terese’s Fern Hollow, probably Sunday, Nov. 29 starting around 2 pm. Bring your friends and make new ones. This will be a fun time.

Lastly, we are looking for new venues for Transition Ferndale events. You are welcome to talk about sustainability at the Stein on Wednesday nights but talk about Transition Ferndale should be at another location. As an open grassroots group, each of you is invited to organize gatherings and post them here.

As one possibility, I picked up an application to use the Ferndale Library. There is the large meeting room and a smaller conference room that seats 12. I don’t know how much lead time is required for approval. Of course, other businesses and homes are fine too.

We have an exciting future ahead of us. For me, my top goal is to make friends in Ferndale who are on a path to a more resilient, less energy dependent future and have fun along the way. I think you guys are great!

Thanks again, Judith, for getting TIF together. I enjoyed our chat last night at F-n-S. Good to see you again, David and Keith, and great meeting Larry and Terese. Good energy, good ideas. I'm looking forward to the pot luck.

HI Terese (and everyone else - this is great, coming into community like this really seems to be working!! YEA)
I learned of a fantastic method of building a chicken house that really works. The initial building process is a bit more involved that just building a roof, floor, and 4 walls, but in the long run it is really worth that first effort. The floor is dirt, with hardware cloth buried 12 - 18 inches under the dirt and curved up to attach to the sides of the building. This keep out any rats or other burrowing predators. The dirt is mixed with wood shavings (which are added to as time passes, as they break down). The dirt, wood shavings, and chicken poop create a good bacteria that promotes a healthy environment for the chickens. The old method creates that ammonia smell that can be so offensive and unhealthy in a chicken house. I go out each morning a "spot" clean" the poops that are obvious and put them in a bucket that is dumped periodically into my compost. It takes me about 10 - 15 minutes for a house that is 7 x 14 feet in size and houses 15 chickens and their feed, straw, etc. And, the best news about all this is that my chicken house does not smell bad at all!! Yah ha!!! ....and so far, I have not had any sick chickens! which is great too. If anyone wants to come for a visit and see it in person, let me know.

wow look at all the members!! very good.... i will not be at the stein this week....2 other meetings....mostly i am there.....sure was a great group last time....and the radio museum looks good....

Welcome, Terese, we went to Bloom's yesterday. The group was small enough that we met new people and had good discussion.

The next big Transition Whatcom event is "Let's Walk the Walk" on Sun 11/15 1-4pm at the Radio Museum. Let's try to get a group together for that since I think it will include some small group planning activities.

Hope to meet up with all of you at Frank-n's one of these Wed nights - I would really like to feel more connected to Ferndale, right now most of my "community" is in Bellingham....so thanks again, Judith, for getting TI Ferndale started

Hi Alys,

Yes Frank-N-Stein is smoke free! Glad to meet another Ferndale-ite! I think we have the roots of a very strong group here, and the knowledge of Walter and Kirk and the farmers is going to help us pull together to transition the awareness of Ferndale! We need to get the Community Garden folks on board here too ~ Andrea Traner & her husband worked very hard to pull the garden together, check it out on Ferndale Rd. in front of the old Parks Department home. Also Larry Williams has not joined yet. We plan to do some sustainability workshops on my property Fern Hollow downtown across from Pioneer Park ~ use of hand garden tools, co-operative chicken coop building workshop (so I can get mine built!) Lots of ideas, lots of creativity in the folks here.

Let's all plan to be at Frank-N-Stein this week to meet. I missed the film showing at Bloom yesterday as I had a lot of apples to pick and process. Got this done! Now we need an apple press for all the Fuji's I have not picked yet. Every Sunday Bloom will host an event at 2 pm.

Hi Judith, I am not sure where North Star is, will have to look it up.

Unfortunately I did not get your message about yesterday's meeting until this morning, so obviously, I wasn't able to come. I am wondering if Fank-n-Stein's is smoke free? If it is I might be able to meet there occasionally. Alys
