We should also add all the food banks, pantries, homeless/low income meal programs as well....I have a huge list of them. Working with Small Potatoes Gleaning Project we are helping these programs serve more fresh, local food. I envision some very intriguing connections arising from partnering with these groups in the idealistic hope that one day we may not need these organizations.

Re Kate's request to "develop a very thorough list of the food security activities and efforts going on right now".
Also add to list:
* Kulshan CLT (Community Land Trust)'s progams: WFI (Whatcom Farm Incubator) and AALF (Affordable Access toLand for Farming).
* Farmer's Markets - all in county & city
* Local farmers/growers/nursery/orchards
* Locally owned grocery stores

Hello all- thanks for being here! This group will be focused on the bigger picture of Food Security in Whatcom County. The project groups such as Seed Savers, Permaculture, the Chicken people (The Flock), the Perennial Project, the CSA Share group, as well as the Food Security Events Planning group (for now) and others on this website will continue to function. However, this group will be looking at ways to support these groups, as well as the many other food security-oriented groups and actions in our County (including the ag industry), will be looking for gaps and how to fill those, and will eventually be using all these connections and all this information to start drafting a 20 year energy descent action pathway or plan. This will end up being our community's road map to how we can meet our county's food needs in times of energy scarcity and eventual depletion.

If you are really interested in chickens, or in saving seeds, or any of the many other wonderful projects, then by all means participate in those efforts. If you want to be a part of the Big Picture in regards to food security planning- this is the site for you.

I am attaching a letter that was sent out to all who have expressed an interest in the food security efforts, and our first goal is to develop a very thorough list of the food security activities and efforts going on right now. I know there is such a list out there...does anyone have such a list or know where there is one? (I don't like to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to!).

Plus, let's plan on ANYONE who is into the food thing getting together at the end of June/early part of July. Anybody into helping plan this? I suggest we have this next one in town for those who don't have cars to be able to attend by bus or bike. A Saturday?
