I got some organic chicken feed, but it goes pretty slow with the compost and plants I throw in. Chickens don't usually eat slugs (ducks do, I have heard) but if your's do- there's some protein I guess! I also throw in a handful or two of cracked corn in the morning which they LOVE. I'd recommend you have some real chicken food available but they won't eat much of it if you throw in goodies- or if they get to be 'free-range' during the day.

We got our three B'gaks! They are happily clucking and pecking away in their chicken run. I am wondering how necessary it is to feed them "Chicken Food" from the feed store, or if they can thrive on the large amounts of various plants and slugs that I feed them-- anyone know?

I don't know, I invited a few other friends who have chickens or are thinking of getting them, but they have not signed up yet. We are here if they need us! Also, I have been getting good chicken information recently from www.backyardchicken.org and other websites.

Congratulations! I call mine The Girls...but they do b'gak at times. No eggs yet, but they are busy making good compost for my garden for next year. I can't believe we're the only ones on the ning with chickens...where is everybody?

in chicken-related news... my honey Jason just built us a wonderful chicken coop and a friend is giving us 3 chickens next week. it will be wonderful to have some b'gaks again (in our house we call our chickens the B'gaks. if you say it, it will make sense!)

Hi Kate, this is a great idea for a group. I know a lot of people are wanting to learn more about raising chickens/ducks. We are finishing our chicken coop now. I am looking for hens to adopt or buy if anyone knows of any.
