I was going to community college and taking out loans to do it. Not being sure what career I wanted, I am now taking a break. I have these thoughts: Question- Why do we need to spend all this money…Continue

Rebecca:
I learned so much early on the path from the Foxfire Books, still have at least 2 or 3 or them in my library. Hide tanning, basket weaving, so many good skills I learned from these. Also "Living On The Land" came out early 70's and has lots of information on native plant harvest & medicinal uses.
Love your compost bin idea!

To Rebecca: I have been using baking soda as toothpaste for several months now. It's really cheap, works great, and adds a touch of alkalinity to an acidic system (unless you are a raw-fooder, you're probably too acidic). If salt is added the result is a toughening of the gums. May not be the end-all but it's cheap and simple with greatly reduced packaging.

Hi Brian
I am probably the best main contact for Transition University (aka - the re-booting of NWFU). Now that The Great Unleashing is over, I hope to start putting more energy into it. Perhaps we should start a small initiating committee (no more than 4 or 5 folk so that meetings and decisions can happen quickly?) There are TWIG members (other than me) that may be interested but I am not sure. Renata has expressed an interest. A previous director of NWFU has been attending meetings with us as well. Please give me a call so we can plan the next steps - one of which is a business plan. We have already met with the 4 other colleges in WC and have some direction as to how to work with them and gain their support. My number is 319-9092. Thanks, Brian.

Hi All,
I am trying to play catch up after this past weekend, lots of neglected things here on the farm to attend to. I wanted to let folks know that I will be looking to set up another meeting for all key players that are interested in birthing a new framework for coordinating a variety of venues and vanes that will assist us in this important ReSilling U. Cindy I hope that you can join us or let the contact person from NW Freedom University know so that they can join us in the development of the new "Transition U" seed panting event. when I get the email list from our group I will send out a doodle meeting request and see who shows up to join in the vision. Stay tuned

Everyone one of us who has a good film camera, still camera, audio recorder or pen and paper can create informational guides to re-skilling. It would save us a great deal of time and energy to have this information online for people to access.

I offer my HD camera, editing services and other technology to help document the re-skilling and get it up there for people to see.

If you have any skills that you would want documented that you offer, let me know.
If there is a skill that you would like to see documented and either you know someone who I can film doing it, connect them to me, or ask me to seek someone with the skill so that I can document it.

I need a web developer/designer to help with the creating of the site that will store these videos and make them searchable by content area. I can use Youtube/vimeo for now, but in the future I would like to have our own schnazzy site that we can get income/local currency from to support our endeavors.

Peace,
James

There is another proposal that has already taken some steps but nothing confirmed at this point. A few of the TWIG as well as some previous directors of NW Freedom University are working on re-booting NWFU into Transition University. At least that is the name we have been using. Not sure if the vision and mission are the same but I am guessing so.

TU was about a grass roots education system focused on transitioning to powered down lifestyles. Instructors are community members. Prices are as affordable as possible. TU would collaborate with the other 4 colleges in WC.

I wanted to through out this idea for the name of this training entity:

Transition Whatcom
Reskilling U.

I can already see the Tee-Shirt possibilities...

Seriously though, how often can you change the name of an educational organization into an "action sentence?" And what could be a more appropriate description of the purpose of the reskilling educational process than focusing on its ability to help people to action as they seek the knowledge to better their own lives and improve the life of their community?
