Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition?
Aside from using alternative transportation (that is feet, bike and bus), eating locally grown organic food, walking in peace and kindness as much as I can, I have recently joined the Transition Whatcom Operating Group.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
Finally, a strong movement putting all the dimensions together! yay! I have wanted to be involved with people working socially, economically, politically, interpersonally and spiritually, toward sustainability, for a long time. Various life circumstances have made it difficult for me to actually get involved until now.
Do you have particular interests, skills, talents or resources you would like to bring to Transition Whatcom?
writing ability, ecopsychology, gardening
In what neighborhood or part of the county do you reside?
right now I am living in Sudden Valley
Your Personal Website (if you have one)
http://www.emilyfarrell.org
Where did you hear about Transition Whatcom and how did you find our community network website?
I have been hearing about Transition Whatcom on and off for a long time, and finally got it together to connect with you.
Please note that you do not have to answer all of the above questions in order to join, and you can always come back later to edit your profile. If it's all too many questions for now, please provide a short answer below on why you'd like to join this site (or a summary of the above, if answered).
I have been interested in sustainability for all of my adult life. I have been interested in Joanna Macy's work, and David Kortten's work about the Great Turning. I have been hearing about Transition Whatcom on and off for a long time, and now am finally ready to become actively involved.

Food for thought for thinking about what fuels Transition on the broadest scale of our imagination:

A Way Home - Ecopsychology and the Renewal of Ourselves and Our World

I recently wrote an article for a publication that ended up not happening, so I thought I would post it here. I hope it provides some food for thought.

".....ecology needs psychology, psychology needs ecology.  The context for defining sanity in our time has reached planetary magnitude”.

What is Your Personal Energy Descent Plan (EDAP)?

As the TWOG continues to explore ways to spark and support Transition Whatcom's efforts, we have begun a discussion about our own personal efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and prepare for climate change. The next few TWOG blog posts will be about our individual efforts, questions and dilemmas. Hopefully this will become the beginning of a community-wide discussion, which can then help inform the creation of an EDAP/ARC for neighborhoods, and eventually for our county as a…

Hi Emily, good to meet you. Klara Weis and I were going to start working on some stuff out here in the SV. Klara recently stepped down as a board member and knows most of the inner workings of the SV system. An issue we were facing had to do with the covenants (as opposed to the SV guidelines). The issue is that to make a change we need a 2/3 of the residential vote (I doubt that many people have ever even turned out for a vote). Perhaps email Klara and get more details - she knows much more about this than I do. Her email is k.weis@comcast.net, you can tell her I gave it to you. My wife and I are about to embark on a new chapter of our life travelling the world so our role here will be greatly diminished but I'll certainly support any way I can. I hope this helps.

Best regards,
- Ethan

Yes, I would. I'm not sure how. I am committed to the Small Potatoes Gleaning Project, and I just heard a buzz that the Bellingham Foodbank will be somehow involved in 3 plots at the new community garden. I may be involved in that. I am currently replacing my "landscaping" with edible and medicinal plants. Would love to talk more.
