River Haven

Riverhaven is a community located on the confluence of Fishtrap Creek and the Nooksack River that is founded on Permaculture principles. The natural current of this place is pulling together a diverse group of people with a common vision of self resiliency, varied skills and talents, and a common respect for the Earth & her inhabitants. Current residents are Chris Testa & Cadence, Krista Rome, and Richard and Hilary Kauffman. We are just beginning, but are already growing and raising most of our own organic food and processing our own fuel (waste vegetable oil). Riverhaven is also the home of the Straight Vegetable Oil Co-op where members can share equipment and space and provide their own fuel. We will be teaching ongoing workshops on homesteading, Permaculture, and related skills- and we host informal visits and work parties frequently- so contact us if there is something you want to learn or share.

Chris and I had a very successful first day at the Lynden Farmers Market today. We had a beautiful, colorful booth full of lettuce, beets, garlic greens, garlic scapes, herbs, strawberries, peas, flaxseed, kale, chard, salad mix, sweet onions, carrots, celery, fava beans, herb starts, and apple trees!  We looked like real farmers!!  (wow, maybe we are real farmers)  And there were lots of customers and a really fun atmosphere.  It was such a great day.

We're smoking and canning salmon this sunday at Riverhaven, all day, if anybody is interested. Call me if so, and we can figure out the timing so you get to see all ends of the process.  224-4757

Giant Pumpkin Carving Day!  A fun day for kids (or kids at heart) to harvest an enormous pumpkin from our field and carve or paint it.  Sunday, Oct 16th from about 2pm to 5pm, followed by optional dinner potluck.  We suggest you bring a $5 donation for the pumpkin if you are able, and a pumpkin-themed dish or local harvest dish to share for dinner.  RSVP to me, Chris Testa, or Krista Rome so we know how many to expect.  Happy Autumn!

Also... Riverhaven would love to acquire a canoe and a rowboat for navigating river, creek, and winter flood waters :)  If you have a small watercraft laying around gathering dust we would love to barter for it or do a "long term loan"!

If anyone is interested in learning Fall food preserving techniques (canning, drying, cider pressing, kim chee, etc) we would love your help with the massive amount of food we need to preserve in the next few weeks.  Contact me, Chris Testa, or Krista Rome to coordinate our schedules (Mondays and evenings are best).
