Fundamentals of Plant Variety Improvement
Learn the basic skills to develop and adapt seed varieties for your organic farm conditions at the Fundamentals of Organic Plant Variety Improvement workshop hosted by the Organic Seed Alliance. Organic Plant Breeding Specialist Dr. John Navazio and seed expert Micaela Colley will teach you how to select for reproductive fitness and yield, horizontal resistance to disease, and improved performance under heat, drought, and cold stress. Basic seed growing experience is recommended.

The 33rd annual Provender Conference "From Dreaming to Doing"
Matthew Dillon, Advocacy Director for OSA will contribute to a panel discussion on "Food integrity, Seed Integrity and Genetically Engineered Crops"
Can organic farmers, food, and the national label maintain their integrity and viability while co-existing with increasing risks from genetically engineered crops? Does co-existence really mean compulsory contamination? Will allowable thresholds weaken the confidence and growth in organic food? The current national legal and regulatory framework does not provide adequate protection to insure that products are 100% GMO free. Can we change it? What are the costs of not changing it? Kristina Hubbard (Farmer to Farmer Campaign on Genetic Engineering), George Kimbrell (Center for Food Safety), and Matthew Dillon (Organic Seed Alliance) will present on work their organizations, including updates on litigation, policy and grassroots initiatives, the increasing incidence of organic fields being planted with seed that contains GE traits, and ways the organic community can work together to protect organic seed an food integrity.

Autumn Seed-Savers Workshop on Sept 27th.!

Bring your best tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, and the like for a hands-on seed saving workshop. We’re joined by seed selection guru Dan Borman of Orcas Island who will guide us through the seed-saving process, talk about the finer points of seed saving and his years of grain and vegetable growing experience.

And maybe folks could bring the beans & peas they still need to shell & label and work on this together!
(I'll be there in spirit if I can't attend in person!)

Volunteers Needed for Clean up & Break-Down for

Inspiration Farm Seed Swap and Barter Exchange
October 18, 2009 from 1pm to 6pm – Location: Inspiration Farm at 619 E. Laurel Rd

Please join us for an informal seed swap and barter exchange: bring your seeds, preserves, etc.
We can provide a limited amount of table space and chairs-- please bring your own table, chair(s) and canopy if you have them. There will be a small donation requested to help pay for envelopes and to compensate speakers (t.b.a.). We need your help: We need a handful of committed volunteers to of help with set-up, clean-up and breakdown. Orcas Island will have their 4^th annual Community Heirloom Seed & Plant Exchange http://orcasissues.com/seed-swap-season-is-upon-us Sunday, Feb 10^th (The people of Island county voted to ban GMO seeds on their lands, and Skagit is moving in this directions too).

'Fundamentals of On-Farm Plant Breeding' March 20^th with Dr. John Navazio (Organic Seed Alliance Senior Scientist and Washington State University Seed Extension Specialist) http://snohomish.wsu.edu/ag/workshops/PlantBreeding2013.htm “You’ll learn how to improve vegetable quality through careful seed selection and improvement as well as how to select for reproductive fitness, yield, disease resistance, and improved performance under adverse conditions. Dr. Navazio will share his knowledge on seed growing basics, sourcing germplasm, and conducting variety trials, as well as basic variety improvement techniques for inbreeding and outbreeding crops. In addition, all attendees will receive a copy of Dr. Navazio's recent book The Organic Seed Grower: A Farmer’s Guide to Vegetable Seed Production, itself a $50 value. Both Krista Rome & myself will be attending this event.

John Navazio, Ph.D. trains farmers, university students, and others in organic seed production and the fundamentals of participatory, on-farm plant breeding for organic systems. His breeding work includes increasing genetic breadth in a number of vegetable crops for their nutritional quality, flavor, texture, ability to scavenge nutrients, compete with weeds, and resist heat and drought.
