'Aging In Place' Seminar at TBD

December 8, 2013 from 1pm to 4pm
WANT TO LIVE AT HOME & STAY INDEPENDENTFOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE?What kind of planning would make this possible for YOU?  Should you move or improve your existing home?  Should you talk about what you want with your family?  How?  What is Universal Design and how is that relevant?  What should you be thinking about if you are considering multi-generational living?  How can you make a ‘shared home’ concept work for you? If you are asking yourself any of these questions… for yourself or for…See More

'Living Democracy' meets to create local campaign and initiating group at 3310 NW Avenue in B'ham

February 1, 2011 from 4pm to 6pm
After a whirlwind weekend in which Thomas Linzey spoke at three separate events, it's time to make hay! We need to plan a campaign relating to corporate power in Bellingham. To develop the plan, and to carry it out, we need an initiating group (remember the Transition Whatcom TWIG?). We'll meet next Tuesday, February 1, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm to work out the details. The meeting will be at A-1 Builders, 3310 Northwest Avenue, just north of Squalicum Way and Maplewood Avenue. If you can't…See More

Strategy Session with Thomas Linzey at Sustainable Living Center above the RE Store

January 14, 2011 from 4pm to 8pm
This is a meeting brought to you by TW's Living Democracy working group and is open to those of you who have previously attended a Paul Cienfuegos' workshop on dismantling corporate power.  We will meet with Thomas Linzey (www.celdf.com) to discuss possible ordinances we might explore to empower local control, strip corporations of personhood rights, as well as give nature inherent rights.  Linzey helped Pittsburgh pass their recent ban on natural gas…See More

Rick Dubrow commented on David Waugh's group Sustainable Transportation
"Great idea but I'll be out of town. I'd love to do this. Consider convening the transportation group which is seeking a Leader (David is out of starte; his father volunteered to carry the fire but then nothing came to pass) AND a project…"

Rick Dubrow replied to Joseph Ford's discussion bike move organization in the group Sustainable Transportation
"I'd like to at least inform realtors I know about this service. They are right there when folks start thinking about moving, so green-leaning realtors may be great 'sales people' for this idea. Is it ok, Joseph, to give out your email…"

Rick Dubrow commented on David Waugh's group Sustainable Transportation
"Ellen Barton has offered to come to our next meeting to give us her take on the leverage points for bike advocacy locally. She also is making 10 copies of the new biking map available to us; I'll bring them to the next meeting."

"Sounds good to me. I assume you're talking about PM and not AM. See you then. And please suggest in your invitation for folks to walk the talk of this group..... get to my office w/o a sigle occupancy car or any kind of car, for that matter."

"Enough Already". Rick Dubrow's Cascadia Weekly “On The Level” Column; Submitted to the Weekly on 1-11-09

Our economy and environment appear to be rumbling down the same train tracks these days. Poised, hopefully, to prove the adage that one must usually break down before you can break through. It would surely be easier and less painful to break through by simply using logic, science or the wisdom of one’s elders to achieve necessary change, but reality appears to require pain in order to achieve gain. And the greater the urgency for change, the more intense must be the pain in order to climb the… Continue

A computer can only do what it’s programmed to do and is only as good as the instructions it’s given, right? You’ve seen this truth time and again. If there’s a logical error in software the result will probably be either a wrong answer or a system crash.

What about you and me? Do we function like a computer? Given that culture is the dominant software downloaded into our incredible cerebrum, how aligned are the programmed, cultural instructions with the health of our natural… Continue

All too often it can prove edgy to speak one’s mind. Your values surface to the tip of your tongue but you hold tight for fear that you’ll expose a part of yourself at odds with your coworkers; at odds with your spouse, church or employer.

Let’s focus on an unintended consequence of our complex industrial system: the steady loss of life. Be it the loss of bio-diversity, the creation of toxic waste, aggravating global warming…… each of us contributes to this tragic drama. Many of us… Continue

Rick Dubrow's May 2009 Whatcom Watch article entitled "Spinning 'round and 'round"

Posted on May 10, 2009 at 10:09pm 0 Comments

Our laundry list of environmental concerns is staggering, driving an aware mind to spin ‘round and ’round. Said spinning feels like two separate wheels……..the menu of concerns drives one wheel while the menu of solutions drives the other.

Stuck in the middle between two wheels, like a bicyclist.

The wheel out front has spokes named global warming; bio-accumulative toxins; peak oil; nuclear waste; over-population….. I won’t depress you by naming the same number of problems… Continue
