Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition?
I'm a founding member of Sustainable Bellingham. I'm doing a lot of volunteering with organizations for sustainability and social justice in Bellingham, always urging them to collaborate and cosponsor projects and events to leverage their effectiveness and to be inclusive and to reach out to more than the "choir".
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I'm a founding member, Vision Team member and board member of Sustainable Bellingham. I first became interested in Transition Towns when I heard about Rob Hopkins and saw a video of an interview with him on the Internet last year. I quickly got a copy of his "The Transition Handbook" and read it and researched his websites. I was really loving his simple but comprehensive--elegant really--" take" on community organizing for meeting climate change and peak oil challenges. I was particularly enjoying his upbeat energy and confidence about it all, something I've always known was absolutely necessary for successful projects and grassroots organizing.
I'm learning about native plants and tracking now, also some permaculture studies. I belong to a Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship Simplicity Circle.
Do you have particular interests, skills, talents or resources you would like to bring to Transition Whatcom?
Yes, computer and website development skills, event organizing, publicity and promotion, e-list creation and management, networking, research skills. Also creative ideas, instigating energy and a lot of experience and connections in the grassroots community.
I'm interested in the big picture--that's my passion. I've made a long term project of studying and experimenting with grassroots and native American inspired organizational models, particularly The Acorn Model or 8-Shields model used and taught by the Wilderness Awareness School in Duval, WA. A few years ago I took a short mentoring course there to develop my experience with it. I have helped propagate it in a few nonprofit organizations here in Bellingham including Sustainable Bellingham, Bellingham IONS, and Awakening The Dreamer Symposiums organizing and in association with the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Seattle.
In what neighborhood or part of the county do you reside?
North Bellingham

A world day of climate action- Oct 24th, 2009

Thanks to Bill McKibben

Bill reports after his organizing trip around the world. -Lynnette

Dear Friends,

I'm back home with my family for a few days, after the third long organizing trip of the past few months.

In a way, this trip was the most extraordinary, because it took me to places where you wouldn't necessarily expect climate organizing to be going full force. But it is--people everywhere are figuring out that 350 is the most important number on… Continue

Announcing Whatcom Progressive Grassroots Network - WPGN

Posted on July 21, 2009 at 10:54pm 0 Comments

Receiving a notice from the MoveOn team, I was able to sign up and "become a fan" and post WPGN's info on Maria Cantwell's Facebook "wall". You can view it in "photos" by hovering over the Whatcom Progressive Grassroots Network jpg. I encourage you to contact her this way with your message.

It says:

Hello Maria, I'm on the webteam of the Whatcom Progressive Grassroots Network. The WPGN brings together politically active groups and individuals from all over Whatcom County to facilitate… Continue

A New Way Forward

Posted on June 3, 2009 at 2:07pm 3 Comments

I am so inspired by A New Way Forward and the video on their site, -"It's Time To Break Up The Banks". Great interviews, after the excellent initial presentation.

I so appreciate Dianne Foster's organizing the streetcorner forum at the Federal building here in Bellingham June 10th at 4PM. I'm helping to get the word out about it.

I hope we follow up on what Spokane did, writing up a community bill of rights and working to get it passed here in Bellingham. I believe We The People can… Continue

Putting Derrick Jensen's ideas into perspective

Posted on May 18, 2009 at 2:27pm 9 Comments

How does Julia Butterfly Hill respond to Derrick's ideas?

How does Rob Hopkins respond to them?

How do Janaia and Robyn of Peak Moment respond to them?

Watching the video clips and the full video of his talk Friday in Bellingham helped me think, feel and process what I heard at his talk. For me it has become a process--a 2nd take, a third take and it goes on.
