Transition Whatcom

Transition Ferndale has been active for some time. We are loosely organized and like it that way. There is no one leader, we have no titles, and there is no solidly set agenda, yet we do a pretty good job with the movie nights and our regular meetings (regular meetings are the second Monday and movie nights are the fourth Tuesday).

I plan to post here on the Transition Whatcom website more frequently so that non members can know what we are doing and participate if they like. We have some great classes and movies coming up.

I encourage others to post here as well. Share your thoughts and opinions. Together we can make Transition Ferndale even better.

Great idea, Keith.

Perhaps we can all put our own pet projects (a la check in ) here as well. It may pique some sharing of ideas and work among us.  For example: you and I are working together with bees, Alys and I have discussed growing our own chicken grains. It is somewhat duplicating the work of the various groups on TW, but keeping our activities closer to home saves gas and travel and will go a long way toward building our local TF group solidarity.

I would certainly like to see more hands-on workshops, but I find that week-ends are particularly difficult to schedule. Perhaps as Judith C suggested a week day would work better for most of us. Perhaps this would be a good place/time to share some of your instructive videos, Peggy, - as in watch the video and then build a solar oven as a group workshop...

I want to continue showing films and having speakers as part of our outreach. I think sharing our views is as important as sharing our expertise, and is a gateway to action for those just coming to an awareness of the descent issues.

I enjoy and respect the work and caring each of you brings to the group. Let's keep up the good work!

Transition Ferndale's next meeting is Mar 14 at Alys Kennedy's house. The subject is Basic Map Reading. I have made packets that include a handout, maps, a lensetic compass with pouch, grease pencil, map overlay material,  and a makeshift waterproof map case. These materials may be used for free, or purchased for $10.

Also at our next meeting we will be discussing our groups organization and communication within the group and to the general public, goals, ideas etc..

Hi Keith,

Sorry long time no involvement with TF group.  I have been going through some serious health issues and often just have enough energy to keep working and go home.  Just starting to feel better this last month. Plus my laptop crashed so either need to fix it or replace.  I have to say this map and compass class is a great idea!  I have taken and taught a little compass use on my Sierra Club outings, especially for the backcountry trips I still lead (no so much this last year though.)  I will also be leading other trips up in our Whatcom County / Skagit County areas, and these trips offer great opportunities to teach  map & compass use.

On that note, I am planning to do a Native Plant foray trip either up near Terrell Creek or down at Padilla Bay Estuarine Reserve down near Samish Island.  Would this be a good tie-in for people to get field practice with a compass?  Not sure if we can get a topo map for Padilla Bay but possibly.  I am going to check some of my surveyor's mapping sites to see if a topo map exists for the Terrell Creek area.  Tentative date is April 9th (a Saturday.)  Would you be the resident expert on this trip?

Thanks,

Terese

The USGS site will let you download topographical maps, plus I have a program from National Geographic that lets me print topo maps from of anywhere in WA.
