Literature Live at Village Books
What if the best responses to peak oil and climate change don't come from government, but from you and me and the people around us?
In 2008, the best-selling The Transition Handbook suggested a model for community-led response to peak oil and climate change. Since then, Transition communities have sprung up globally- Transition Whatcom in 2009 became the 17th official Transition Initiative (of over 100) in the US. The Transition Companion picks up the story and tells inspiring tales of communities like ours, working for a future where local economies are valued and nurtured; where lower energy use is seen as a benefit; and where enterprise, creativity, and the building of resilience have become cornerstones for increased community well-being and purpose.
We’ll view a video greeting to Whatcom County from author Rob Hopkins, recorded for our 2009 "Great Unleashing," and members of Transition Whatcom will lead a discussion about the book and local efforts to rebuild community resilience.
