Personal Finance Workgroup meeting notes 11/7/10

Move your Money Campaign:
- Discussed presenters:
- David Korten: group was concerned that Korten is not specific enough to MYM campaign and may be too expensive.
- Diane suggested Kristi Lauzza-Boosman, group will check out Kristi.
- Discussed possible format of event/campaign:
- speaker/large discussion event, invite banks/CUs with ranking of 5 from brochure with booths to change accounts onsite.
- handing out brochures on the street
- radio debate CU vs bank?
- Joe Tehan radio show KBAI 930 AM
- journalism piece
- film screening: “Money Fix”, or possibly clips from “Money as Debt”.
- Iphone app for check deposits available at Chase bank, Linda will ask WECU if they could
get this technology.
Local Investing
- Laura reported on conversation with LION contact James Frazier. Agreed to work on and use anonymous
investor survey, Laura will post and group will edit.
- David presented an for a “Dry Goods Store” as an example of a business to invest in.
State Bank Campaign
Caitlin reported on State Bank Campaign and upcoming event in Seattle Nov. 18th. (see State Bank discussion for details)
Private Label CDs/Community Investment Notes
Laura presented on “private label CD’s.” Group will consider this after we get survey results back.
Diane introduced a resource: Americans for Financial Reform
Group Tasks to be completed before next meeting:
- Review/edit survey (already posted under the Local Investing discussion) so we can send it out to TW members before our next meeting. Caitlin will handle the internet part.
- vet Kristi Laguzza-Boosman: do we want her to be a speaker for MYM campaign? Please post your thoughts in the MYM discussion page.
- continue to investigate other possible speakers
- determine if we want to show any parts of the films Money as Debt or The Money Fix. Both begin by explaining what your money does when you put it in a bank and then go on to larger issues.
Next meeting will be Sunday, December 5 from 1-3pm in the Coop Connections building.
