Having a Cistern

My husband and I are moving to 20 acres on the mountain! Yay! The only source of water is a cistern from a natural spring. I was wondering if anybody has any tips or things I should know about having and maintaining a cistern.

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition?
I am not currently involved, but would love to be! I am looking for more information!
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I am interested mainly because I see myself as a very spiritual person who truly loves and cares for our planet. I want to be more connected to nature and learn skills that help me learn to live in a sustainable manner. At this point, I have virtually NO skills! But I really want to learn. I am also seeking to meet more like minded people. I live in the county where it can be hard to connect with others that share my views.
Do you have particular interests, skills, talents or resources you would like to bring to Transition Whatcom?
Like I said, I have virtually NO skills! I am a mother of 2, I work in the office for my husband's contracting company and I stay home. I do focus a lot of my energy on creating healthy meals for my family that are made with "whole" foods. We have 4 chickens, a goat and 3 cows which we have acquired only in this past year. I am very passionate about my spirituality. I walk with Jesus daily, but I dont go to church. I spend a lot of time reading my Bible and love deep conversations. I believe in living a clean life. I want to learn more so that I can teach more. I think what I could bring to Transition Whatcom would be enthusiasm and a zestful attitude. Oh yeah, I'd bring my husband too! He's pretty amazing when it comes to skills. He's a builder and plumber. He loves nature and survival. He's worked a bit with solar panels. Just an all around neat guy!
In what neighborhood or part of the county do you reside?
Sumas, WA
Where did you hear about Transition Whatcom and how did you find our community network website?
From a good friend of mine. She didn't know too much about Transition Whatcom, but in a conversation with me she felt it would be something I might me interested in.
