Samish Neighborhood is the largest Bellingham neighborhood- 2,030 acres including Lake Padden Park. Close to 3,500 people live in this southern Bellingham neighborhood filled with large single-family lots, pastoral lands, trails and recreation areas.

Comment by Travis Linds on December 21, 2009 at 11:51am: Thanks Kate for organizing the potluck, I also enjoyed meeting new people in our neighborhood and enjoyed Andy Day's emergency preparedness talk, we also feel it is applicable to any number of emergencies.

It was a great success, and I think we all left feeling enthusiastic and looking forward to working together! We have planned another event in January and will be 'widening' our circle, so any other Samish area folks, please stay tuned.

Andy Day talked a bit about emergency planning, and filled us in on the Map Your Neighborhood project. It is mainly being encouraged in cases of what he calls, "acute emergencies", such as earthquakes or very bad storms, but the idea can be expanded to include not only locations of vulnerable residents, and where gas mains are, to include mapping of skills, who has equipment they can share, where land is available for gardening, people who want to garden, and lots more.

I left feeling really happy to have connected with some people I did not know, and to get to know the others a little better. Transition Group Samish is awesome!

Comment by Kate Clark on December 9, 2009 at 8:49pm: Hey all- Andy Day who heads the Bellingham Emergency Response Department (among other things) lives in our neighborhood! I invited him to the potluck and he has offered to tell us about the Mapping Your Neighborhood efforts that have already been started! It should be very interesting- so I hope you all can make it Sunday. FYI, Chris Moench has also said he is going to come. Now all I have to do is cut a path through the woods and I'll be like little Red Riding Hood getting around over here.

Since some of the Transitions are actually going through the process of becoming Officially Recognized through the global TI network, and some are still fairly informal groups like ours- it helps me if we can ID them as "groups" or as Initiatives. This isn't any kind of new rule or anything, just helpful to me and some of the TWIG group.

Marilyn has reserved the building for us, and we are all inviting someone. Call me at 927-5184 if you have any questions. I'm bringing a main dish vegetarian casserole...and can probably WALK there. Wow- don't get to do that very often.

One thing...there may be two separate groups, one from Padden area and south to the Bear Creek Nursery, and another North up in the 41st-42nd, and the 'hood up there (Molly Monahan is up there too). At any rate, we are planning a potluck on either the 6th or the 13th of December so I'll keep you posted.

Doris, is very knowledgeable & experienced with simple living for many decades....And Virginia is also aware of changes our families must move towards to live lightly on the earth. This is one group on our WT site they may have interest in, through attending family-oriented gathering-event, even though their lives are full. I hope you will welcome my presence here & my mission to involve my family.
