Event Description

On Thursday, November 14th at 7:00 pm, Rabbi Michael Lerner, “the most prophetic public speaker and intellectual of our time” according to professor and author, Cornel West, will share his vision on how to build a spiritually progressive political movement so we can move American politics from a perspective that hurts the poor and middle-class and undermines the rights and protections won by women, gays and minorities, toward a perspective that builds love, generosity and corporate environmental and social responsibility.

During his talk, Rabbi Lerner will address the following questions:

* What can ordinary Americans do to protect our country from extremists and corporations that are determined to defund our government and dismantle programs that protect the poor and most powerless in our society?

* How can we respond to the inability of Democrats to put forward a positive alternative vision, much less to develop a program capable of saving the environment and reversing the political and economic policies and corporate behaviors that have put the earth in danger?

* How can we push the President and Democrats to take a strong stand for the 99% rather than be mired in ambivalence and support of the 1%?

Though deeply rooted in Judaism, Rabbi Lerner’s approach developed from his years as a social change activist (including as one of the “Seattle Seven” in the early 1970s when he taught at UW) and a psychologist who, as chair of the Institute for Labor and Mental Health, studied the psychodynamics of American society and came to understand the need for progressives to understand the deep spiritual and psychological crises facing much of America, a crisis that the Right has managed to manipulate and the Left has managed to ignore.

Location: 210 Academic West at WWU (park at Fairhaven College and then walk through the tunnel under the road headed towards the main campus buildings. AW is the first building on your left).

Cost:  $10.00 donation is requested. (No one will be turned away for lack of funds.)
