Join us as we welcome author Rhona McAdam back to our store for an evening presentation about her book, Digging the City. Based in Canada, McAdam writes and studies food and farming in Canada. Her book looks at how we feed and protect the food sources of urban centers, where most of a country's population is based. Rhona will share what she’s learned in Canada and discuss how all countries can consider the importance of food security. She focuses on the ability to feed the urban poor, the dependence on imported foods and centralized food processing, detachment from food sources, and the often problematic solutions to food security devised by governments, municipalities and nonprofit groups. This event is co-sponsored by Transition Whatcom. Rhona will be signing copies of her book earlier in the day at the Wednesday Farmer's Market on the Fairhaven Village Green at 3pm.
Rhona McAdam is a poet and food writer who has eaten well in many countries. She has a master's degree in Food Culture & Communication from the University of Gastronomic Sciences (Slow Food's university in northern Italy), writes a food and poetry blog (the Iambic Cafe), and is active in Victoria's food security network. She developed and taught an online course in urban agriculture and food security for St. Lawrence College in Ontario, Canada.
