RE Sources for Sustainable Communities will host world-renowned renewable energy scientist Dr. Dan Kammen on October 5, 2012 at 7:00 at the Bellingham High School Auditorium. Dr. Kammen will present his talk, “Imagine Energy Independence” – a look at the innovations and barriers to developing a local renewable energy system. Donations will be accepted at the door ($7 suggested). “This talk is particularly timely,” states Crina Hoyer, RE Sources’ Executive Director. “As Whatcom County grapples with questions about fossil fuel use, wind energy and coal export, Dr. Kammen will offer inspiration and instruction for creating a carbon-free economy.”

Through his work with Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (REAL), Dr. Kammen designs and implements projects in communities around the globe. Projects range from solutions for small communities struggling to meet energy access needs to large-scale regional grids where technologies, policies, and usage patterns are all in play to build energy systems across the planet. In addition to his work with REAL, Daniel Kammen is a coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. From 2010 to 2011, he was the inaugural Chief Technical Specialist for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency at the World Bank. Dr. Kammen has founded or is on the board of over 10 companies, and has served the State of California and U.S. federal government in expert and advisory capacities. He has authored or co-authored 12 books, written more than 240 peer-reviewed journal publications, testified more than 40 times to U.S. state and federal congressional briefings, and has provided various governments with more than 50 technical reports. Dr. Kammen also served for many years on the Technical Review Board of the Global Environment Facility.

“This is a truly extraordinary opportunity for Whatcom County,” says Hoyer. “Rarely do we have a chance to learn from leaders and pioneers of Dr. Kammen’s status. He holds the key to help us unlock the door to our local energy independence.”
