Event Description

Earth Day at the Woolley Food Forest

Edible Hedgerow Class and Work Party

Saturday, April 22nd

10 am - 1 pm

At the site of the new Helping Hands Food Bank at the corner of Fruitdale and Wicker Rd., Just east of Sedro-Woolley.

Free Event!

Come learn about edible hedgerows, then help plant one!

Edible Hedgerows are excellent, low-maintenance fences that provide not only food for humans but also habitat for wildlife, bugs, and birds.

10:20 -11:00 am Class.  You will learn about the benefits of edible hedgerows, aspects to consider when designing your own, and how to plant.  We will also be covering the basics of sheet mulching (otherwise known as lasagna gardening).

11:00 am - 1:00 pm Plant and sheet mulch edible hedgerow.  To be planted: hazelnuts, plums, serviceberry, Pacific crabapple, Nootka rose, sword ferns, kinnikinnick, Siberian pea shrub, elderberry, and Chinese dogwood.

Wear gloves and sturdy shoes.  If you can, bring shovels, garden or hay forks for moving mulch, and/or rakes.  We will also have extra on site.  There will be plenty of snacks (donated by the Woolley Market), drinks and good cheer!  Come at any time.

The Skagit Conservation District is a sponsor of this event and the edible hedgerow that will border the east side of the food forest.  They kindly donated hundreds of dollars of useful, edible trees, shrubs and ground cover for this project.  The Woolley Food Forest, in partnership with the Helping Hands Food Bank, is an amazing community wide effort that would be impossible without the support of our committed, community partners and volunteers.  Together we are creating greater community resilience, food security and environmental stewardship.  Thank you!
