Coop Tour

The Flock's first Chicken Coop Tour - Saturday Nov. 14th from noon to 5pm or so. ... was very successful. Lots of chickens and information, conversation and laughs. This discussion can re-open when we're ready to organize another one.

Gosh! I'd really like to see some of the Great Coops. Mine is sort of lame.

I think however people cobble together their coops is interesting, Kate. But we can check yours out on another tour if you just want to look this time. ;-}

Alicia I'm laughing about your idea of rounding us up with bird seed....I'll take mine with some garlic & fresh greens please....Whatever you all figure out...I sure hope I'll be able to attend and soak in the wisdom & our love of birds!

If it the coop works for the chickens that is what is important.
my first coop was litaraly a large freight box.
It once blew apart in a wind storm thank god my house mate was home to screw it back together
The one I have now is just a shed nothing fancy, utilitarian.
I look forward to seeing other coops

If we're doing the 21st I might need to meet you all somewhere and miss the first 1 or 2 coops as I will be leading a workparty that day at the Roosevelt School Garden from 10-1....but I definitely still want to come along!

If you end up needing another flock to visit, I'll offer mine....we're in the Fairhaven neighborhood down near the ferry terminal so it's a small lot with cosmopolitan ladies. I have 2 very different set-ups (to keep our young ladies separated from the older ones) plus a make-shift chicken tractor. We're in the process of trying to figure out the best set-up so it'd actually be great to have feedback from you all! If it isn't possible on this tour, no worries, that'll give me time to have it all spectacular for the next tour!

Hey all...
I'm just joining this group. I'm thinking about getting some chickens to help out with a bindweed problem I have. So I need to learn all I can on building a coop with preferably recycled materials (I'm going to have to miss the workshop at the Re-Store next weekend), as well as how to raise them in a way so they can be left alone for 2-3 days at a shot with plenty of food, water & protection.

When is the tour you're talking about???...I'm hoping I didn't miss it.

Unfortunately I won't be able to do the 14th either...

Maybe I can talk to some of you on the tour individually & work out a day/time to meet you, talk & get info on getting started with building a coop, safe outdoor space for them & chicken selection.

That all sounds great to me....one thing though is I just found out my cousin (Melissa) will be visiting from California that weekend. I'm not sure if she's interested in coops, but would anybody mind if she tags along? She's a great gal and an engineer....maybe she'll have feedback from that perspective!

As far as folks coming, my two cents would be that the tour is for current Flock members ... and if someone wants to bring a guest that is fine. Keeping in mind that a smaller number allows us more time for questions and getting to know one another.

I'd be glad to meet with you and show you my place sometime after the tour, Suki. But for starters, I'd suggest putting your questions on the main discussion page - which is an excellent way to access the collective wisdom of this flock of chicken-lovers.
