I spent some time on the phone with Amy Keenan of Whatcom Planning Dept today. Interesting parameters around land use...some explaining why eco-villages are not so common.
Cluster housing is an option, however the lots have to be portioned out in subdivision style on no less than 1/2 acre per lot with a single family residence on that parcel. Most areas where ecovillages are feasable are going to be zoned R-5, that is one residence per 5 acres. Which means for 10 housing units 50 acres of R-5 land is required. There are areas where higher density butts up against less dense such as in Urban growth areas around Ferndale, Bellingham & Lynden, but most of that land is already owned or slated for development.
Additionally, for facilities such as an educational center, a Conditional Use Process is required. The process is designed to assure that there is proper traffic flow, septic potential, parking, and other commercial utility functions.
In short, it is possible to build an ecovillage...it just may not be easy to locate it in Whatcom County. At least not w/out a fair bit of magic or other socially unexplainable phenomenon.......if ya know what I mean!

Great story from Missoula on how developers and farmland advocates have disagreed over how best to preserve Missoula's remaining prime soil, but now they seek solutions both can dig....check out this article....

Hi,

I've just joined TW and am hearing wonderful things about this group from Renata and others. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you in person next Thursday at the potluck.

In the meantime I would like to offer a link to a vision statement draft for a "Community Supported Center" idea I've been working on that may have some applications to this discussion. I bring this only as a starting point offering with the hope that many people will help shape it with the dreams they have been carrying.

I hope I am not over stepping the concept of this group, but I would like to post that I am looking for co-housing people to come and live with me in my home. I have two bedrooms available. Rooms for rent with closets on the main floor next to bathroom, in a beautiful Craftsman style home in the Columbia/Fountain neighborhood just off Meridian. Right on bus line and close to downtown. Lots of storage in shop. Off street parking. Rent is $300.00, includes all utilities and is month to month. Asking for first and last months rent upfront, no additional deposit. Please pass this along if you know someone who might fit.

I have another recommendation for a study group: taking an inventory of resources we can offer towards community living. As we went around the circle yesterday I was present to the breath and wealth of resources that we each can offer towards creation of various community living projects: land, group facilitation/NVC, bio-conversions, permaculture, cash....
