I enjoyed the meeting last night discussing the great unleashing. It got me excited and thinking. One suggestion was to have the event powered using only sustainable power. Well, I think I can help.…Continue

How are you currently involved in the Transition?
Mainly involved through River Haven Farm, putting on various workshops and attracting like minded people to work together and make change.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I want to live more sustainably.
Do you have particular interests, skills, talents or resources you would like to bring to Transition Whatcom?
I am a Mechanical Engineer and love to tinker. I can convert vehicles to run on vegetable oil as well as capable of other sustainable projects (micro hydro, greywater systems, rain collection, etc.). I drive a chevy Luv 4x4 running 100% on waste vegetable oil (no diesel at all, not even start/stop). I am also working on heating and generating electricity all with waste vegetable oil. I know that using fuel derived from food crops is not the solution to our pending energy crisis, but I feel it is a step in the right direction (or at least not a step in the wrong direction).
In what neighborhood or part of the county do you reside?

Biogas Generation

Posted on November 14, 2009 at 3:30pm 7 Comments

I found a great book "A Chinese Biogas Manual" which was translated from chinese and is a guide on how to build simple, biogas generators from local material in small communities. It even goes into storage and use of the biogas. I know that the reason most dairies are not generating biogas is due to the the high costs of the stainless steel digesters. This book explains how to make suitable digesters in the ground out of stone, brick, clay and concrete for cheap. Does anyone know of any local… Continue

Thanks Angela MacLeod

Hey Travis

Shannon Maris here..

I have an opportunity to get a free Toyota camper van and I am wondering if it could be converted to diesel. I am waiting to here back from the owner on the year. model, cc's, etc.

It has a blown engine so why not pop a diesel in it, instead of another gas engine.

It's a toyota so I am hoping to find a re-manuf. replacement engine from overseas, or something more reasonably priced than a new engine from Toyota.

Any tips or resources you have would be appreciated.

Hi Travis
I'd like to talk to you about your blueberry bushes for sale. I visited your website but didn't see anyway to contact you from there. I've heard that different types of blueberries bloom and fruit at different times so you could get a few different types and have blueberries through the summer. I'd like to know more about that and what types you have. Could you give me a call please? Angela MacLeod 733-3541

Hey Travis- the black currants are incredible. I made liqueur, jelly, and syrup, nearly black and all full of flavor. I feel like I should take a spoonful of the syrup daily as a health supplement! Do you still have berry bushes for sale?

HI Travis,
Ive got a few pizza ovens to be built and possibly a earth bag cold storage project this summer and in early fall I plan to plaster some of my cob house. I will keep the building group posted as projects unfold. If you hear of any possible projects i would be happy to consult or facillatate a workshop.

Travis,

It was great to meet you at the Community Living Meeting last night. It turns out that Kelcey my wife has purchased Blue Berry bushes from you at your house. It was great to hear that you are transitioning away from IKO, I currently work for Mills Electric who did work for IKO and am also looking to transition away from the industrial industry in the near future.

Travis,
Today, I cut sod in preparation of planting the blueberry plants I purchased from you. It appears that the soil has a higher than average clay content. Do you have any suggestions for the proper type of soil amendment(s)?

I believe blueberries to be a perfect food and I'd like to do this right. Any tips you have to offer would be appreciated.

Thanks

Greg Mayes
