Michael Cook of Portland's City Repair and Transition Whatcom are hosting this workshop on Placemaking. What is Placemaking, you say?
From City Repair's website (cityrepair.org) placemaking is a process within which citizens foster active, engaged relationships to the spaces which they inhabit, and shape those spaces in a way which creates a sense of communal stewardship and lived connection. This is most often accomplished through a creative reclamation of public space: projects which take the form of benches on street corners where neighbors can sit, rest and talk with each other, kiosks on sidewalks where neighbors can post information about local events, needs and resources and street paintings in the public right-of-way that demonstrate to all who pass through that this is a Place: inhabited, known and loved by its residents.
Or in another scenario, imagine the earthquake in Japan....where did neighbors go after the earthquake? How did they know where to gather? The process of placemaking will create a cohesive, connected and informed neighborhood.
Friday event will involve an hour of hands on from 6:00 to 7:30, then a presentation about Placemaking efforts by City repair.
Practice your skills on Saturday, May 14th for a practice day at the Food Bank Garden across from the Farmer's Market at Railroad and Maple and the BUGS garden installation. See the next event listings.

I think this is changing into an evening talk on Friday night, then the all day Saturday workshop. Paul Kearsley will fill us in on the details of the Friday event. As the planning process goes on, it sounds better and better.

As part of Transition Whatcom's Home and Garden Challenge we are hosting Michael Cook on Friday May 13th to work with Transition on Placemaking. Visit www.cityrepair.org to read about and see the inspiring work that this organization does! On May 14th, there will be 3 workparties throughout the county - one of which will be at the Farmer's Market on May 14th. What a weekend this will be!
