Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition?
I drive a hybrid. We use florescent bulbs in 95% of our indoor lighting at home and have certified fireplace inserts in our fireplaces. I have an 8000 square foot organic garden that produces food I put up each fall. I plan to buy day old chickens and turkeys this spring to add to the farm. The coops are designed to catch rainwater and use solar power—phase 2. We try to buy locally and support local farms. Even my favorite wine is produced in Washington. We take full advantage of Whatcom’s recycling program. I hope to do more.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
My mother is 90 years old. She grew up in Vancouver Washington during a time when cars were rare and food was local. My father, who died at the age of 89, grew up on a "prune farm" in Clark County Washington. We always had a garden and a friend with beef cattle. I believe processed food is killing us, farms are being destroyed, seeds are being corrupted and diversity lost. Our streams and fish are being sacrificed for our greed and our dependence on petroleum and petroleum products is a travesty. Wisdom is being replaced by ignorance and fear. Common sense is being silenced and ridiculed.
Do you have particular interests, skills, talents or resources you would like to bring to Transition Whatcom?
I don't think so.
In what neighborhood or part of the county do you reside?
My farm is in Dewey Valley, but I live on Alabama hill.

I want to help

New Birds

I got my baby chickens on May 10. One day old babies. I got my baby turkey on May 14. Again, one day old babies. I've lost three little turkey babies and one little chick--I'm apparently not the greatest mother hen--but I am trying very hard. Almost all my crops are planted and seem to be doing well despite the weather here. We have yet to put in the tender crops, like the tomatoes, but they are doing well in the green house. I have hired four college kids and one young unemployed man to help plant and hoe and weed. Life may be wet and colder than we'd wish, but life is fine and grows green and healthy!!!

Hi Katherine! I was just searching this site to find out if I have any neighbors near me who are interested in sustainability, gardening, etc. I see you have a farm in Dewey Valley-- is that Dewey Rd. between VanWyck and Mt. Baker Hwy? If so, that is really close to where I live off VanWyck. I would love to come visit your farm and meet you. Message me or call me at home 734.3501 or cell 961.9028 if you want to get together. Thanks!

Hi Katherine! Wow you sound like my kind of gardener, blessed with experience, wisdom, fertile ground, and an experienced elder in your life!
I'm also an organic gardener & a permaculturist. We welcome your help and your presence here!
If you are interested, there is a 'Organic Gardeners & Permaculturist' group on this site under the 'Groups' tab, and we are planning our 2nd annual Seed-Swap event for this Jan 2010. I look forward to meeting you and possibly working together at some spring'garden work parties!
