Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition?
For 40+ years I've worked in a number of ways to protect and improve life on our planet. I think all Life is involved in a critical Transition, and it's crucial that we use our experiences, knowledge, care and individual resources to collectively help create and direct radical (root-based) change.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I HATE GREED! I know of no other species that manifests it to the point of self-extinction. We have much to learn from plants, animals and each other.

My grandparents (in Whatcom Co.) had no electricity or running water. They burned wood for heating & cooking, and ate what they raised. I loved staying with them. Their kids were teased in school for how they dressed and smelled. But they were loved, loving and lived sustainably.

I envision a clean world without war. Humans have survived thus far from cooperation, not from killing each other.

In 1976 I had a car that got 55 miles/gallon. Imports of this Honda (a very light car with a small wheel base) were later outlawed ostensibly for 'safety' reasons. I've been told that big oil was behind this. I'd love to see big oil and centralized energy sources become obsolete, and they would if our government stopped subsidizing them and started funding alternatives. We're on the brink of a very exciting era!
Do you have particular interests, skills, talents or resources you would like to bring to Transition Whatcom?
I began a non-profit organization called Partnering with Animals and the Land (PAL). Its mission is to strengthen the minds & bodies of children & adults with (& w/o) physical, emotional, behavioral or cognitive challenges through their connections with animals and the land. I'm a certified therapeutic horseback riding instructor and have spent over 20 years working with 'at risk' adolescents. My 11-acre farm has many habitats and lots of wildlife. I've been working to protect it and other lands from development.
In what neighborhood or part of the county do you reside?
Squalicum Valley

Hi Gwen! Great to see you here. I hear through the grapevine that you have a new puppy. How is the farm shaping up this year? Ginger

Hi Gwen, welcome to the Transition Whatcom site. I just read your profile, and your healing work with people and animals reminds me of the work of a good friend of mine, Ginger Kennell. She does equine-facilitated psychotherapy at her farm north of Bellingham. I don't know if you two already know each other, but if not, she is also a member of the Transition Whatcom site and you two may want to communicate. Thanks for doing this very important work!!
