Transition Whatcom

(written from
memory, not necessarily in order)

Present:  Krista Hunter, Judith Culver, David Culver, Diane Foster, Karen Hamaleinen, Caitlin Quigley, Shirley Jacobson, Laura Sellens

Shirley brought in a sketch of Move Your Money Brochure, we discussed what we want to put on it.  Shirley, Judith and maybe Caitlin? will work on this before the next
meeting.  Discussed the credit union
survey, David C agreed to try again to talk to Skagit Bank CEO and do the
survey for Pacific NW CU.

Discussed local investing/loaning.  No real options at this time.  Reviewed last month’s meeting at Sustainable Connections.  Two different scales are apparent:  microloans and larger
loans.  Judith agreed to talk to the
Jefferson County LIONS network to see if we could use their model.  She will also look into how surveymonkey
works.  Karen agreed to talk to the Small
Business Development Center and find out more about what they offer.  Discussed and tabled the idea of surveying TW
members about local investing.  David had
the idea of holding a meeting on local investing.  Krista will look into private label CDs
(People’s, ShoreBank).

Discussed debt education talk.  Diane said Paul Storer from WWU might be a resource, also Kristi Laguza- Bozeman might be interested in giving a talk.  Diane, Caitlin and Laura formed a committee to look into developing or sponsoring a talk for college students in the fall.

Krista asked for clarity on mission of this workgroup.  Discussed the large scope we have.

Judith updated us on Keizer Meats.

Diane mentioned there is a lot of overlap between different groups, mentioned a kegger at Boundary Bay Aug 22nd to brainstorm, identified potential for future collaboration with other groups.

Laura mentioned the possibility of handing over the convener position.

Next meeting:  8/29/10 1-3pm at Co-op Connections Building

Shirley, I'm thinking I'll wait to post the credit union survey table until David C gets back to us with PacNW CU, if that suits you. Saves us the trouble of editing and reposting it later...
