1/9/11 Personal Finance Workgroup meeting notes

In attendance: Caitlin Quigley, David Marshak, Judith Culver, Shirley Jacobsen, Dianne Foster, Laura Sellens

Agenda:  Go over survey results and begin planning Move your Money Campaign

Survey Results:

-clear interest shown on both sides, investors and borrowers

-Caitlin will correspond with Bob Ferris at ReSources and Jennifer Shelton at SBDC,Laura will correspond with Derek Long at SC, to see if these groups want to partner with us.

Move Your Money Campaign:

-Discussed making this a part of a larger April event with other branches of TW

-Laid out a potential timeline:

  • Monday radio show (Joe Show) with Jared Gardner of Portland MYM, hopefully with a slot on the 8am (conservative) show as well, as this is a non-partisan issue.
  • Article in the Cascadia Weekly.
  • Canvass outside megabanks with the brochure (needs updating) on Friday and possibly other days.   Teach-in volunteers, and Living Democracy group members as potential helpers on canvassing.
  • Event on Friday or Saturday with either a film and panel discussion with bank and credit union reps, OR a speaker and panel.  We decided against having lots of CU and bank reps at booths and would like to have switch kits available instead.  We like the Money Fix but the only solution it offers is local currencies, doesn’t speak to local financial institutions at all.

-Laura will go see film “Economics of Happiness” to see if it would be a good fit.  –caveat:  if it’s safe to drive.

-Discussed explicit goals for the campaign.  We could present these goals to potential speakers (Kristi Laguzza-Boosman, Jared Gardner, David Korten) and see if they would be willing to speak to them (andhow much they would cost)  Shirley will correspond with Jared and Dianne will correspond with Kristi and try to correspond with David Korten.

Goals for the Move Your Money Campaign:

-Educate people on how money is created

-Inspire people to move their money to local institutions/show the benefit of this

-Increase local financial security

-Increase community strength

-Concentrate resources for the local good

Noted:  June National BALLE Conference here in Bellingham

Movies:  “Inside Job” at the Pickford this week, and “Race to Nowhere” about testing pressures on students

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 6th from 1-3pm.

Great notes!  Thanks for posting for us living outside the urban meeting zone and not able to attend.

Would you keep me in the email communication loop?

I've missed the communication about the 'proposal' process that was referred to in our comment page from Laura & Walter.
