Transition Whatcom

Hello all,

We are sad to say that we have to sell our beautiful 1935 Craftsman home that we have recently upgraded with sustainability in mind over the last year. Although we do have it listed with a realtor in order to make the sale fast, we would love to pass the home along to someone who will appreciate the sustainable features we have so lovingly done. If you contact me directly and I refer you to our realtor we will also save a bit on the commission, which we can pass along to you in a lower sales price.

The home is a 1935 Craftsman with a big front porch, 4 bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths all in a compact 1850 sq ft. It is beautifully updated with wood floors throughout. We have installed a large solar panel system with all components made in Washington State through EcoTech. The system qualifies for the highest level of PSE rebates per KwH (0.54/kwh produced), resulting in approx. $2,000 annually in a check cut to you, the owner, from PSE. This is in addition to the very significant savings from your electricity bill.  The solar system also has battery backup, which is a rarity in modern solar systems in this area. This means that if the power goes out, all essential systems will still be running (freezer, fridge, septic, a few lights & outlets, etc). This was essential for us to not lose our freezer full of meat!  We also installed the capability to plug in a generator from outside to charge the batteries in case of a long outage in bad weather.

In addition to the solar system, we have completed ALL of the recommended insulation/sealing and upgrades through the Community Energy Challenge (CEC), resulting in a very air-tight home for its age. We also installed a brand new Heat Pump Hot Water Heater that vents the cold air outside (or could redirect to vent into a cold storage room!) The house has a full unfinished basement for tons of storage of canned goods, etc. We had plans to build a cold storage room into one of the corners of the basement for storage of fresh fruit, which would be a very easy upgrade.

The home sits on just under 1 acre surrounded by rolling hills and farms in all directions (there is also a field just behind the property that could potentially be purchased from the neighbors that would add an additional acre). It is located on Aldergrove Road north of Ferndale near Lake Terrill Wildlife Reserve.  We have 6 large, mature apple trees, multiple cherry trees, and a plum tree already on the property. We also have recently planted a native huckleberry bush that should produce fruit this season. There are many blackberry bushes bordering the property as well. We have 3 small raised beds for vegetables currently and plenty of space for more - it is a sunny lot. We were planning to redesign the property with even more native/perennial edibles, but unfortunately work forces a move.

Send me an email if you'd like more info and to arrange to see the home. We are asking $359,000.
