"LANDOWNERS" - If you can offer some sunny land for a gardener to improve the fertility & diversity of, either in the country or urban zones, please let us know by posting on this discussion.

(include your address location/neighborhood).  Then after you communicate with a potential gardener, you decide if it is a match for you.  

(Later community volunteers hope have a more effective online matching service through the "www.urbangardenshare.org".)

 

GARDENERS OFFERING THEIR SKILLS  to improve the fertility & diversity of anothers garden or land.   

If you are interested in edible gardening on some land posted here, please contact the person who is offering the land space through their comment page. 

Another good way to find  garden space, is to walk through the alleys in your neighborhood looking for gardens that could use your help, or land that would be good to garden. (Start out small if you are a beginner.) (Also try posting on the fourthcornerexchange.com network exchanging local 'life-dollars'.

 

"Land-owner" - once your offer of sharing land or garden space is met, please return to this discussion and 'X" out your reply post. reply post, move the curser to the right of the top line of your post.  (This is done by signing on to TW, than going to your st until the hidden "X" appears, then click on that X to remove your post.)

Also needed, is someone willing to coordinate & find an online garden-sharing & mapping system for our Whatcom area. If you know anyone who is already doing this in our county, please pass the word. Attempts have been made in the past with volunteers & interns, but the follow through has not yet happened! Any ideas on which local organization would offer office support & space for someone committed to making this happen?

Some locations where people live are shaded by tall trees and there is not enough sun to grow edible plants. Those elder tree are beneficial to the whole neighborhood beyond the limits of the home. Its important that neighbors are encouraged to preserve their trees.

Sharing part of the sunshine on your land to a neighbor to garden on, could help those old trees stay standing. If you're not growing a garden in your yard, then plant trees & shrubs!

Sandie- re garden space - my friend Jasmin & I are both interested in caring for land to grow more field crops, like squash, beans, pototoes, cut flowers (good for bees & pollinators). We are both long time gardeners and already care for a few gardens, but desire more land....(also more plants, helpers, compost, etc :-) )
I'll pass your info on to her as I'm out of the region till March. I had hoped to find something either in Birchwood, Southside, or Agate Bay-Squalicum Mt area, but so far no other leads. We are also interested in finding land to 'buy" with others, to plant more perennial edible trees & shrubs, and share in the labor & harvest.

As you will see, there are so many...

I think for starters for our strongly rural-urban&forested Whatcom landscape, it would make sense to choose just a few areas to list as neighorhoods...since many of them are small, and many of the seaside neighorbhoods are level & easily accessible by bicycle to each other.

For starters,here is a smaller list of area's I suggest we have included in the online site's map:
Birchwood, Columbia, York, Southside, B'ham Urban Center, Samish,
Sudden Valley, Birch Bay, Blaine, Ferndale, Lynden/Nooksack/Everson, MapleFalls/Glacier/Kendall, Agate Bay/Goshen/Rome, North urban B'ham, North rural Whatcom County, East urban B'ham, East rural Whatcom county. (All – let me know if I missed an area you think we should also include for starters).

Our city has some computer mapping links but I currently do not have access to them.
Possibly David W or another person could find them if needed.
I'm thinking that it might be helpful if I started another discussion in regards to getting this online garden space exchange set up using Amy's program, as this one was started to channel folks with offers of land to post...which has worked....
(and I have another location to yet post that came to me from fourthcornerexchange.com, our local alternative currency.)

I'm excited for this tool to be developed for us to use...even as I also know person to person connections between gardeners & 'tax-paying land owners' can be effective, and is the current method that is now working among those who share skills & land.

Notice that a New Discussion is now started to continue the work towards creating an online site for a local GardenShare program,
by having whatcom gardeners & gardens & neighborhood map added to the www.urbangardenshare.org website, that Amy & friends created for our Seattle neighbors.

Follow this discussion as we co-create with Amy Pennington, Jesse, Colin, Gannon, myself, & friends as we add Whatcom gardeners & gardens to the already existing urbangardenshare.org website that was first created for Seattle neighbors by Amy & friends.

Once we have the site running for Whatcom gardeners & gardens, we will request help with local promotion to spread the word, and we hope to have the site ready before April's planting days and before our Whatcom Transition Great Unleashing event!

There is already a demand for garden space needing gardeners, and especially for gardeners & new-gardeners needing sunny garden space!

I need an computer or gardening  friend to help, with just a little time, with this project, so please let me know if you can be available to back me up when I'm not able to be online....I'm a gardener and not always functional on computers.
