Event Description

RE Sources and the Pickford Film Centre bring to Bellingham the shocking eco-documentary, “The Last Mountain”. The horrific storyline charts the catastrophic effects of coal mining in West Virginia’s Coal River Valley, using mountaintop removal –
literally dynamiting a mounting to scrape the coal from beneath. After a
reported 500 Appalachian mountains have been
obliterated through this mining process, the locals are fighting for support
against the industry giant, Massy Coal. Not only are the Appalachian’s
crumbling, but water sources are being poisoned, flooding is rampant, sludge
dumps are accumulating, tumor clusters in locals are developing, not to mention
the detrimental effects from burning
the coal.

Join RE Sources for Sustainable Communities for a presentation and panel discussion after the film to get familiar with our own local fight against big coal. Learn the facts, get your questions answered, and find out how you can become involved in the battle against North America’s largest coal export terminal proposed right here in Whatcom County. Panel discussion will only be held on the opening and closing of the film, Friday 15th & Thursday 21st.

“The Last Mountain” will run from July 15th – 21st at 6:00pm at the original Pickford Film Center location on Cornwall, now re-opened as the Pickford Limelight. For questions, contact hannahc@re-sources.org or call 733.8307. To purchase tickets online, visit http://pickfordcinema.org .
