MLK Jr. Day Event 

Bellingham, Washington | In honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., A Community celebration of MLK Jr. Day – Keeping the Dream Alive! On this evening, we will celebrate Dr. King’s notion of a “Beloved Community,” with ceremony, song, and special presentations.

Special Musical Guest:

Checo Tohomaso (performing throughout the evening)

Checo Tohomaso played keyboards and percussion and sang background vocals for the last European tour of Motown legend Marvin Gaye. He has also performed with Lionel Richie and the Commodores, Celine Dion, New Kids on the Block, and Reba McEntire, among others. Checo’s current focus is to communicate the positive, healing qualities of soul music to as many people as possible. Checo will be our musical guest throughout the evening. He is spirited, authentic, and true to the music. Not to be missed. Community will be invited to sing along with Checo and celebrate Dr. King.  

Special Poet Guest: 

Kevin Murphy 

Kevin Murphy has been performing his  dynamic poetry for over 40 years.  Kevin is the “poet-in-residence” of the Chuckanut Radio Hour, and was the winner of a Bellingham Mayor’s Art Award in 2017. He has taught poetry writing through Whatcom Community College and the Whatcom Juvenile Justice Creative Writing Program.

Special Emcee Guest:

Terrance Morris – Diversity advocate, founder of A Connection, Unity committee president, and Whatcom County Racial Equity Commission.
