Event Description

"Bellingham's Transportation Future" sounds a bit dull but it is not.

This is a slide show created by an engineer who lived in Europe and learned first-hand how people get around without cars. The slides show special streets restricted to pedestrian traffic ("fussgangerzones" in German); integration of bicycle, pedestrian, and auto traffic in novel ways, and innovations, such as pedestrian-only bridges and cable-cars that are counter-balanced for minimum energy costs.

Of particular concern today is the need for waterfront development to avoid congestion of auto traffic, creating a barrier between downtown Bellingham and the waterfront, to the detriment of both. This slide show is about possible alternatives.
