Event Description

Bellingham Friends Meeting will host a live history program addressing prison reform with the talent of Roena Oesting.

This performance is a costumed, one-woman show featuring Roena Oesting as Elizabeth Fry, the 19th century humanitarian whose passion and commitment led to reforms in prisons, insane asylums, hospitals, and poor houses.

This free community event will be held at the Creekside Building 1701 Ellis St. #215 on June 22nd with refreshments served at 11:30 and a performance start time of noon.

Co-sponsored by Bellingham Books to Prisoners and the Restorative Community Coalition, it is geared to be engaging for people ages 12 and up with childcare provided for younger children at no cost and to address 50+ audience members. It is approximately an hour long including time for questions.

The performance encourages audience participation and has traveled the United States and abroad, inviting people from all walks of life to experience directly one of history’s great social reformers. “Since many prisoners would eventually be freed back into society, she urged education and training programs be set up to give former prisoners some means of supporting themselves” Quote from Roena Oesting’s brochure on Elizabeth Fry.
