There will be a solar food dehydrating workshop on Wednesday by Zach and Shawna. More details soon... Please check out and print the revised gleaning fliers and spread em around town, Thanx!
  • Christie Cassel

Any Western students have any printing quota leftover? They cut you off like Thursday of finals week. Use it up on color copies of the gleaning flier? The pdf file is in the Gleaning Flier Revised discussion. That would be super cool. Wednesday afternoon after the solar food dehydrating workshop might be a good day to get together for some mapping/fliering. Who's down?
  • Christie Cassel

Who wants to go tree mapping and flier spreading?
Thursdays and weekends are good for me!
  • Jamie Jedinak

Christie what Wednesday is the solar food dehydrating workshop, when and where? Thanks, Jamie
  • Morgan Lingbloom

I will be here this weekend - I would love to help spread some fliers.
  • Christie Cassel

Jamie, the solar food dehydrating workshop was June 9th. See the pictures on my profile. We built a model and the plan was to have a second larger workshop once we already had one built. There will be a presentation at a Solar Washington meeting (open to the public) in late August or Sept. Details soon!

Morgan, sweet! Let's do it! I'll print out fliers. Is Friday, Saturday or Sunday best for you?
  • Jamie Jedinak

oh well, ill catch the next one - please include date!!!
  • Morgan Lingbloom

Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning work best for me to pass out fliers. I hope others can come too!
  • Christie Cassel

For sure! Let's do it Sunday then. I'll create an event and a meeting spot... Public Market? Is 10 a.m. good? Depending on who and how many show up, we could probably split up and adventure into different parts of town. Yay!
  • Christie Cassel

event posted on facebook, and waiting approval on Transition Whatcom, should pop up anytime...

I hope to be there to help out a bit on Sunday. Sorry I've been out of touch - traveling back east.
  • Christie Cassel

So so sorry, but I have to postpone one week.
    Hope that works for everyone!

Plums, blueberries, blackberries, tiz the season! What is everyone up to?
I'm done with school for the summer and have energy to focus on gleaning ;o) Let's do something! Cheers! xoxo
  • Anita Hanks

Hello everyone. I have a friend who works with Haggen in the plant department. Haggen has 30 3-gal tomatoe and corn starts to donate to a non-profit preferably tomorrow. Do you know of a non-profit who can take these and plant them? Please call me or email. 510-4739.
  • Jean Kroll

I have a fuel-efficient passenger car if someone has a truck. I can carry up to 3 passengers (as long as they're not really tall!) and the truck can carry the buckets of gleaning treasure. Weekends and Tues afternoons work for me!
  • Christie Cassel

Anita, The Food Bank Farm is the first organization that comes to mind. I'm pretty sure that they have non-profit status, but not 100% Here's a start.

    Good luck and Thank You!
  • Christie Cassel

Jean, awesome! I have a car and access to a truck, and today I am fixing my bike trailer ;) Would you like to co-organize a glean? I just made you a group administrator, in case you want to create a group event, etc. Let's keep in touch. Weekends are really good for me, but Saturdays are usually so full with other summer fun... I was thinking about making Sundays gleaning days (in general) what do you (and everyone else) think? Gleaning season is here =)
  • Jean Kroll

How about next Sunday, August 8? Don't know where to go -- hoping someone else can take the lead on that. I'm just offering a ride, some buckets, some sunscreen -- and maybe a dip in the lake afterwards if it is a really hot day! (BTW - I have to be back at 6:00 pm on Sundays due to work).
  • Christie Cassel

Unfortunately, I am unavailable on the 8th, but feel free to do something without me... I am available every Sunday after that indefinitely... all the way through apples. There will also be a solar food dehydrating workshop with Solar Washington at the Res-Store mid-August - super excited about that! More details soon.
  • Jeffrey Westcott

I have a little pick-up that doesn't get used too much. This would be as good of a reason as any to use it. Let me know. The whole weekend of 14th is bad for me though.
  • Jean Kroll

How about Tuesday the 17th after 1:00 pm?
I am new to gleaning: does anyone know which farms are taking gleaners? Do we have to call them in advance? Are Sundays open for gleaning? How long will this gleaning season last for which fruits? Etc., etc!
  • Christie Cassel

  • Christie Cassel

Cider time! Does anyone have or know of a press?
  • Jamie Jedinak

Sandie Ledray has a press...she had a pressing party last weekend, she's here on TW!
  • Christie Cassel

Cool. Thanks! I may throw a pressing party together this weekend.
  • Jamie Jedinak

    Yah, what kinda apples?
  • Christie Cassel

Mcintosh apple glean this Saturday, October 23rd and pressing party to follow. Who wants in?
  • Jamie Jedinak

I would love to, timing? I have a class until 6pm, will I be too late?
  • Christie Cassel

Haven't firmed up a time yet, but was picturing a morning/afternoon project. Do you have time before your class?
  • Jamie Jedinak

hmmm, class starts at 10am, bummer huh? Oh well! sad but true. I have missed several others as well, sad but true...wahhh
  • Jamie Jedinak

If it is Sunday, I'm all over that!!!! plenty of time then.....

More related to Transition in general, rahter than gleaning, but check this out!
Gleaning macintosh apples tomorrow. Waiting to hear back from host. I'll post what time as soon as I know! It's a small job anyway...

Delete Comment Hey food security people, I have held off as a lot of you were busy with planting and then harvest...I assume things may have slowed a bit by now. I would like to start planning a Whatcom Food Security Summit for January or February. My goals at least, would be to get these food security efforts, groups, organizations, etc. together to assess the current situation, and see where there needs to be more support and where there may be complete gaps. Any of you interested in being on a planning team for this?
  • Christie Cassel

No time for planning, being a busy student, but will attend the summit if I am able. Thank you for planning! I hope The Caretakers House ends up geting their commercial kitchen. Maybe the most important thing we could do as a community for food security currently is help raise funds for the center for local self reliance?
  • Jean Kroll

As a Board member for The Center for Local Self-Reliance, I say -- we would welcome your support in raising funds to remodel the house! The sooner we raise the needed funds, the sooner we can be open for cooking and preserving workshops, plus seed-saving, wild-crafting and so much more! If interested, please contact Steve at caretakershouse@gmail.com.
  • Christie Cassel

Hey Gleaners! Sorry I've pretty much dropped the ball this year. Would anyone else like to organize an apple glean?

    Sorry!

I need to step out of an administrative role, so what I'm going to do is make every member an administrator and see what happens!

    Very Communal, eh?

  • Christie Cassel

Hmmmm . . . .  I can't figure how to do that now. But I remember last year I made a few of the first people that joined the group an admin, just like on facebook, how an admin and edit members to add more admins. Does anyone know how to do that?
  • T. Abe Lloyd

There hasn't been much discussion for a while, but I am keen to glean.  I was thinking it would be fun to organize a nettle pesto party where we make and can or freeze a bunch of nettle pesto.  Anyone interested?  I know a spot with acres of nettles...

  • Jean Kroll

That sounds like a fun idea!  And now is the time to grab those nettles, as they will flower soon.

  • Jamie Jedinak

Abe,  I would love to do this....hopefully this patch is not close to flowering, then we would need to move up into the mountains or somewhere where they are less mature...I'm in!  I can bring all my own jars as well!  :)  756-9919  I'm free Monday!

  • Megan A. Barnes

Sounds fun. I'd live to try and come, if my schedule allows. I dont have much to offer(I'm new to all this)...other than energy. I can bring something?
  • T. Abe Lloyd

Great! Sounds like there is some interest in this.  I propose that on Monday we meet at 5:00 pm at the Bloedel Donovan Parking Lot, head up to Squalicum Mountain (via Academy) with bags, gloves, etc. and pick a bunch of nettles.  We can figure out where and when to make the pesto at that point.  Given the higher elevation of the patch, I think they are still good for picking (they were last week).

  • Jamie Jedinak

Thats sounds Good!  The only thing that might be helpful is to have a better sense of what we will do afterwards so we can gather supplies and any types of equipment we may want to have.

I'm an advocate of setting it up well ahead of time to have an easy time rather than ooops this and ooops that b/c we chose to leave it to last.  Your call.....

    I am at 756-9919 ~  Jamie

  • T. Abe Lloyd

I live in a community style house with a big kitchen.  If people want to process the nettles right away (which might take a while), we can do that in my kitchen.

My sense is that people will want to go home for dinner and maybe process the nettles later.

  • Jamie Jedinak

I'm sorry, I guess I misunderstood from your note below inviting us all that we would all be processing the stuff together.  did you change your mind and just want to harvest together?  jamie

  • T. Abe Lloyd

Let's go for it then.  We'll make pesto right after we collect the nettles.  I have a blender.  Bring your favorite pesto ingredients (olive oil, pine nuts, parmesan cheese, garlic...).  I don't have a pressure caner, but I will probably freeze mine.

  • Jean Kroll

Ah heck, tonight is my book club night!  Have fun picking nettles and making pesto  Let me know how it goes!  I love the idea of wild harvesting/gleaning/ processing foods as a community!

  • Megan A. Barnes

Im not able to make it:( I have to work late. Have fun!
