We agree that people and households that are financially secure are more resilient, and our community will be more resilient if its members are more financially secure.
Don't forget to attend the next TW Quarterly potluck and membership meeting on Oct 21st at 2:30PM at the Cordata COOP. You can update the membership on any recent activity and invite new work group members.
I have a friend looking for a financial advisor/investment service. She is pretty sophisticated about finance but is not able to use the internet. She needs assistance with transactions and reporting. She's thinking maybe a fee-based advisor. Also someone who would understand her concerns about US currency and stock market. Anybody got an idea for her? Please contact me at judithculv@hotmail.com.
Hello, fellow personal finance enthusiasts, Activity on this group has waned since a few years ago when we were actively campaigning for “move your money”. An active group move off and formed the Whatcom Investing Network (WIN). We meet monthly and provide an active venue for local businesses seeking funding to meet local investors. We have around 25 active investors and a membership twice that. We have loaned almost $700,000 to 10 local businesses. The best part is the excitement we feel becoming friends of business owners and really helping them move their businesses forward. With two years of experience behind us, we are spreading the word to people who are ready to become active investors. Our experience has been that most businesses seek a minimum investment of $10,000 (occasionally $5000 or less) from each investor because they can only reasonably service a limited number of loans. A member does not need to invest or pay any other fee to join. Some are learning and getting ready. We have been offering training to members and others to improve our ability to evaluate opportunities. Next Wednesday, May 22 from 7-9 pm we are offering “Understanding Financial Statements-Beyond the Basics” given by one of our members, who is a CPA and experienced instructor. If you want to find out more about the content and location, contact me at judithculv@hotmail.com or through the transition website. Lastly, you can find out about WIN and our events at our website www.whatcominvesting.org or from me. We would welcome your friends too if you know anyone who might be interested.
