Food Security Group

We will be supporting existing community and TW food security-oriented projects, organizations, and the local ag industry; assessing gaps and how to fill them; and starting a plan for dramatically increasing food security in the next 10-20 years.

Great article posted on TW, from BC, but most of the points apply here as well.

Re autumn get-together for planning & visioning:
We might be able to stack time functions and do some post-harvest activity with our hands while meeting...garlic will need to be cleaned and beans need to be shucked....Once the the bulk of the harvest is under cover one of the growers may be willing to volunteer their barn or shed and we can work together while meeting.

Kate & Juliet, I'm still waiting on a copy of the neighborhood list that I helped put up at Great Unleashing for folks living in Squalicum Valley & Agate Bay watershed...would I be able to come by and help you look through the paper stack if you're not able to find? Thanks! There are some names on that list that I'd like to follow up on and enourage them to reconnect with TW and start a local network. I know you both have local TW groups but those of us in the western foothills don't, Yet.

Once the harvest winds down, let's have a Food Security Get-together. There a LOTS of things going on with regards to food- that list we put together is probably still missing some things. It'd be nice to get an update from the major players. We might also see if we can partner with the local GROW Magazine, and start adding some articles about TW activities and events. November?

INTERESTING, if alarming, article in NYT today.

He (author, Julian Cribb) proposes subsidizing small farms for their stewardship of the earth, and paying them fairer prices for production; taxing food to reflect its true costs to the environment; regulating practices that counter sustainability and rewarding those that promote it; and educating the public about the true costs of food. “An entire year of primary schooling” should be devoted to the importance of growing and eating food, he suggests

Found this...maybe you all have discussed and I missed it. Look like our own Jamie J. from Bellingham is the only one here who has discovered it. This could be an EXCELLENT tool! Our BUGS people- do you use this or a tool like this?

Hi Food Security People- Thought I'd update you on what I am doing. I have the list and have been adding to it as I get feedback from you and from other sources. There are some interesting 'food security' things going on all the time- Sustainable Connections busy, the WSU Extension folks, the permaculturists, the Gleaners are gearing up, and the Whatcom School Garden Collective has some wonderful crops showing up. Please be sure to check out the various group on this site and follow links...its apparent that food security is something many folks are thinking about these days. If you have any exceptional links to projects, please post here for us.

I have been thinking that teaching our young people to grow food may be one of the best resilience building activities I know, so have been working with Laura Plaut of Common Threads to pursue a possible Youth Employment/Community Garden project in a low income area in the county. If this comes together, it could be a great model for expanded programs like this throughout the area.

Finally, there is talk of an All Transition Harvest Celebration this fall- our new leadership council will let us know more as plans unfold. Please take a moment to read more about them and send them a congratulations! http://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/forum/topics/tws-new-leadership-w...

Kate,

I reviewed your document to see where the local meat producers could be added. If you ever expand upon the "Local farmers/farms/growers/nursery/orchards" entry under Grow Food, I could contribute. Please add under "Related to Food Growing", the Weston A. Price Foundation, local Bellingham chapter. We now have a website: http://groups.google.com/group/wapf-bellingham.

Under TW groups, add GMO Awareness & Action.
