Event Description

Join other herbal enthusiasts at the Cedar Mountain Herb School and carpool up into the mountains in Skagit County for a day of wild plant ID, harvesting and medicine making. It's a mini-apprenticeship for those who have limited time or wish to learn more about the wild plants that live in the Pacific Northwest.

We'll don the gloves and hunt the prickly Devil's Club! The Club of the Devil - with a name like that, it seems we should wear some sort of protection, don't you think?

Devil's Club - Oplopanax horridum, our west coast "sang." That's ginseng to you non-hillbillies. An all over strengthener/nourisher, food to our immune system and adrenals. Helps relieve the cravings for alcohol, caffeine, drugs, junk food, and more. Devil's Club helps during cold/flu and allergy season with lung issues, and is used as a pain reliever. We will harvest the roots and recumbent stems. Very prickly work... you'll need to bring heavy leather gloves and wear thick jeans for this work. We will be processing our Devil's Club on site. That's called "making field medicine!"

Western Red Cedar - Thuja plicata, is best known for its ability to kill certain bacteria and fungi. Cedar is also a powerful immune system stimulant. We'll harvest cedar tips, make smudge bundles and medicine and learn how to best utilize this valuable tree.
