SUMMARY:Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent
DESCRIPTION:A FREE community event: Author Andrew Nikiforuk will appea
r at Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, 1708 \"I\" Street, on Wednesday,
April 1st at 7pm.\n\nPlease join me! Andrew will present his book, Ta
r Sands (buy the book here), and discuss the impacts seen in Alberta.
The presentation will be followed by a solution-focused panel discussi
on that I will be a part of, and Q&A relative to the presentation and
focusing on what the Tar Sands have to do with Bellingham/Washington/T
he US, and the bigger picture of our cultural dependence on oil and co
nsiderations for a sustainable future. We're hoping that Transition Wh
atcom will get a mention.\n\nThe oil sands in Fort McMurray, Alberta a
re the world’s largest energy project, America’s #1 supply of crud
e oil, and have been criticized as a source of “dirty oil.” The en
vironmental and social impact of the tar sands has led Al Gore to dub
them “an economic weapon of mass destruction,” and yet, people in
Washington State consume and process more oil from the Fort McMurray t
ar sands than those in British Columbia or any one Canadian province.
Andrew Nikiforuk’s Tar Sands declares a political emergency, outline
s the issues as he sees them, and proposes solutions. Is it really as
bad as it seems? Join us and find out.\n\nEvent sponsored by Village B
ooks and co-sponsored by: Sustainable Bellingham, City of Bellingham,
RE_Sources, Sustainable Connections, Whatcom Transit Authority, and th
e Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship's Green Sanctuary Team & Social Just
ice Committee, ForestEthics.\n\nFor more information visit https://tra
