SUMMARY:Planning and Planting Your Winter Garden
DESCRIPTION:It’s possible to grow and harvest vegetables almost year
around in the Northwest. The peak of summer is the best time to plan
and plant a winter garden. Join us for a discussion on the types of pl
ants to grow, special fertility and soil requirements for winter garde
ning, and use of cloches and frost blankets to extend harvest.\n\nClou
d Mountain is a nonprofit community farm and education center in Evers
on, Wash.  Created in 2011, after 33 years as a working farm, Cloud M
ountain expands Whatcom County’s food system by training individuals
who wish to learn the business and agricultural skills needed to succ
eed in today’s farming environment. Cloud Mountain continues to sell
fruit and ornamental plants to the public at its nursery, located on
the 20-acre farm at 6906 Goodwin Road. Proceeds support paid internshi
ps for aspiring farmers and nearly two dozen workshops offered free of
charge to farmers and home gardeners. Additionally, Cloud Mountain co
ntinues to operate as a working farm and conducts field trials on a va
riety of fruits and vegetables in partnership with Washington State De
partment of Agriculture, Washington State University Extension, Commun
ity Food Co-op, and Whatcom Community Foundation. Seasonal fruits and
vegetables grown at Cloud Mountain are available at the farm center’
s on-site produce stand, as well as at Bellingham Farmers Market.  Ho
urs are seasonal. Through June they are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday throu
gh Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. \n\nFor more information
