Event Description

RE Sources for Sustainable Communities is hosting a No Coal Community Celebration on June 10th in Fairhaven to commemorate the successful conclusion of our community’s fight against the proposed Gateway Pacific coal terminal project at Cherry Point. The project was rejected on May 9, 2016 after the Army Corps of Engineers upheld Lummi Nation’s treaty rights and denied permits for the terminal.

The party is from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM on Friday, June 10th, at the Fairhaven Village Green, 1207 10th St., Bellingham. Parking is limited; please carpool, bus, walk, or bike to the event.

The No Coal Community Celebration will feature speakers from Lummi Nation, with music by the Legendary Chucklenuts and guest performances from BandZandt and Tracy Spring. There will also be an “Appreciation Station,” where participants can create and sign posters and cards thanking Lummi Nation for their leadership.

A beer garden hosted by the event’s sponsor, Boundary Bay Brewery, will raise funds to support RE Sources’ continued efforts to push for a more sustainable future at Cherry Point. RE Sources is rallying the community to encourage the Whatcom County Council to include policies in the county’s Comprehensive Plan that would take a step toward closing the door on new fossil fuel export projects for generations to come.

At 7:30 PM, participants will have the opportunity to recreate an iconic photo from May 2011, when RE Sources first launched its campaign against the coal terminal during a rally on the Fairhaven Village Green.
