Good New Rick about there not being any 'trash' at our 'Walking the Walk' event.
Thanks for the work you did to make that happen! I brought my own mug so I was set, except for when using the papers in the bathroom...
I'm still learning about the "Zero Waste" promotions that is one the green 'buzz' words...
It would be great if others volunteered to work with you to continue to create & communicate "Zero Waste" events for our Transition events.. Let me know if you have an interest in…

It would be great if others volunteered to work with you to continue to create & communicate "Zero Waste" events for our Transition events.. Let me know if you have an interest in connecting with Mary Jensen, a Carbon Master & Zero Waste events coordinator, to have her help in working on the Great Unleashing Event, especially if its held at a location that has not yet implimented zero waste containers.
. . . Like you've said, we can't do it all on our own. . .

One 'zero waste' part I am not convinced about, yet, is the use of recycleable oil-based-plastics & corn-starch containers. ( I find my garden soil & worms are not convinced either.)
I am also not convinced about having our recycled paper shipped far away using fossil fuels.
I remember years ago you're builders business recycling wood out front even before the concept was well known off!
I admire your persistance in leading the way by example!

Maybe one of us will someday initiate a TW forum/discussion on:
'Life Cycles- Care of Resources & Reducing Waste". My sense is there is no true "away" or "dump" or "trash"....while the planet is still alive & breathing it all eventually cycles somewhere over & over.

(May my awareness strengthen my walk . . . somewhere . . over the rainbow. . . and not my american-human-environmental-guilt.) Since I helped set up the recycling system for the event and am very well aware of what a ZERO WASTE event is all about, I believe we achieved this goal. That said, we should have been more proactive in verbally announcing the goal right when we got the event underway, including pointing out the location of the recycling center (which was right inside the entrance door for participants). I then put the contaviers away and it appeared to me that nothing became 'true' trash; everything I saw will…

Thanks to all who created the "Lets Walk the Walk' event. It was fun to be together!
In the future it is important that we do the preperations to create a 'Zero-Waste' event.

Some respectful observations: Some of the attenders were new to Transition Whatcom.
They were not aware of the online networking through ning-site, and had not been part of past TW posted events or neighborhood groups. I have spoken to one new family, and will contact the other to request their feedback.
The brief piece I can share, is that it was noticable 'Transition Whatcom' did not take the time to prepare to create a 'Zero-Waste' event. One way to define 'zero-waste', is that it is giving priortity to waste management even when its inconvenient.

My 'carbon-master' educated friend who noticed this, is not yet signed on to the TW-ning, but she already has helped create a zero-waste event for about 300 people with over 12 venders, at St.Lukes health education center.

I am encouraging the twig-seed folks, to consider a 'zero-waste' event for the 'Great Unleashing' in March , and for requesting that my friend, Mary, help lead this effort as a trained WSU-Carbon-Master. She is very professional, gifted, and would only be interested if there were support from the twig-seed team, as creating a zero-waste event would take preparation time to set up, and costs money, (only $15). She also has created a 'zero-waste' household.

My friend also provided me with feedback on their impressions of the neighborhood breakouts sessions. I respect the opinion of both new families who attended. I am willing to share their feedback details over the phone with a twig-seed member if I am phoned.

I am also interested in hearing others feedback on how to improve 'walking our talk' at future events. It was a good event for the t…tag:transitionwhatcom.ning.com,2009-11-16:2723460:Comment:106502009-11-16T04:42:56.656ZBrian Carpenterhttps://transitionwhatcom.ning.com/profile/BrianCarpenter
It was a good event for the time I was there, though one feels some irony in meeting to talk about walking...

Good to see everyone and meet a few new people!

Here is the basic agenda--Welcome and short intro to TW (5 minutes); Short review of the agenda; breakout by area/neighborhood to meet up, get to know each other, swap contact info, think about possible projects; come back together and invite sharing about ideas; Short intro to some existing projects, and a little brainstorming about other possible projects; break out by project area allowing time to go to more than one project area; come back to larger group and have a little time for sharing…

Hi Kate! Put me on your list for helping out at this event that is next weekend!
If there is an agenda that day, could someone post it.
I am imagining that we will be moving around and not sitting down all day.
I love maps and navigating and so much more!
