 thwest Research and Extension Center in Mount Vernon invite you to att
 end an evening forum entitled “Beyond Local and Organic: Future Dire
 ctions for Sustainable Food Systems” on October 22, 7:00-8:30 PM.\n\
 nThis event, which is free and open to the public, will feature the fo
 od systems scholars and innovators Jack Kloppenburg, Diane Dempster an
 d Branden Born, who will discuss whether local and organic are compreh
 ensive approaches to sustainability in agriculture.\n\n• Jack Kloppe
 nburg is a professor in the Department of Community and Environmental 
 Sociology at the University of Wisconsin Madison and is well-known for
  his work in examining the social impacts of agricultural systems, esp
 ecially as related to agricultural research, plant breeding, local foo
 d systems and farm to school initiatives.\n\n• Diane Dempster has be
 en involved in organic agriculture in Washington for over 20 years. Di
 ane currently serves as the president of Washington Tilth, is the orga
 nic buyer for Charlie’s Produce in Seattle and manages Farmers Own, 
 a division of Charlie’s which contracts with growers to act as their
  sales agent.\n\n• Branden Born is an assistant professor in the Dep
 artment of Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington s
