SUMMARY:Author talk: Exxon Valdez disaster & risks facing Salish Sea c
 ommunities
DESCRIPTION:“Red Light to Starboard: Recalling the Exxon Valdez Disa
ster” author Angela Day will discuss the 1989 oil spill and similar
risks facing Salish Sea communities during a free book reading, presen
tation, and Q&A from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 25th, at Bellingh
am Unitarian Fellowship, 1207 Ellsworth St, Bellingham. The event is c
o-sponsored by North Cascades Audubon Society and RE Sources for Susta
inable Communities.\n\n“Red Light to Starboard” documents the trag
ic oil spill that stunned the world, discusses the environmental impac
ts from the spill, and recounts the regional and natural history of Pr
ince William Sound in the Gulf of Alaska.\n\nAngela Day lives in Snoho
mish, Washington and is married to Bobby Day, a long-time fisherman fr
om Prince William Sound. The book centers on his story and that of his
family, whose history is deeply rooted in the region. Based on a weal
th of family history and first-hand experiences, the book offers a per
sonal account of the oil spill’s impacts on individual lives and loc
al communities.\n\nDuring the event, Day will share her thoughts on th
e Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project, which would
nearly triple capacity of an existing pipeline ending just north of t
he U.S.-Canada border in Burnaby, British Columbia. The proposed proje
ct would drastically increase the amount of crude oil tanker traffic i
n the Salish Sea.\n\n“Whatcom County residents are faced with a pote
ntially huge increase in crude oil tanker traffic in the Salish Sea du
e to this proposed expansion project,” Day says. “I look forward t
o having a discussion about lessons learned and how they apply to the
risks in the Salish Sea today by prividing some insights about what th
e past can teach us about the future.”\n\n“Red Light to Starboard
won the Western Writers of America 2015 Spur Award in the Best West
ern Contemporary Nonfiction” category, and was a finalist in the ann
ual Foreword Review INDIES Book of the Year Awards. For more informati
